The practice of people travelling to another country for medical treatment—often for procedures or services that may be more accessible, affordable, or of higher quality in the destination country—is known as medical tourism.

  • Additionally, India has a strong reputation in complementary and alternative medicine and a rising demand for wellness services like yoga and meditation worldwide.
  • In many developed countries, patients frequently wait months or even years for specialised medical care. 
    • In contrast, India boasts significantly shorter waiting times, thanks to an efficient healthcare system that provides prompt treatment without unnecessary delays.

Issues Pertaining to Medical Tourism in India

  • Communication Barriers: Language differences can pose challenges for medical tourists.
  • Variability in Standards: There are variations in the standards of medical services across India, which can be problematic.
  • Ethical and Legal Norms: Differences in ethical and legal norms among countries may create difficulties for medical tourism.
  • Transportation and Accessibility: Patients undergoing treatments in remote or less urbanised areas may face challenges with transportation and accessibility.

Initiatives By Government

  • The “E-Medical Visa” and the “E-Medical Attendant Visa” have been introduced for citizens from 156 countries.
  • The Ayush Visa is available for tourists who wish to visit India for medical tourism.
  • The government has launched the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism and the Responsible Traveller campaign.
  • The Heal in India initiative aims to promote Medical Value Travel in the country, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has developed the Medical Value Travel Digital Portal to facilitate foreign patients coming to India for treatment.
  • Indiahealthtourism.com has been launched in three languages—Arabic, Russian, and French—by the Commerce Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Health to provide comprehensive information to travellers.

Way Forward

  • There is a need to create health infrastructure and train health service providers.
  • Emphasise the importance of providing exceptional customer service, which includes personalised attention and language support.
  • Acquire and promote globally recognized quality certifications for healthcare establishments to build confidence and legitimacy among prospective clients.
  • Collaborate with the regional travel industry to develop packages that combine travel and healthcare.
  • Provide prospective patients with opportunities for telemedicine consultations to discuss their medical concerns before booking a trip.
  • Share patient testimonials, success stories, and information about medical services on social media platforms.
