Navy Submarine docks in Indonesia

Context: 

An Indian Navy Kilo class conventional submarine, INS Sindhukesari, docked in Jakarta, Indonesia, for the first time from February 22 to 24.

About INS Sindhukesari:

  • India’s Navy has 16 conventional submarines in service, seven of which are Russian Kilo-class, four are German HDW submarines and five are French Scorpene class submarines.
  • It is a diesel-electric submarine. It belongs to Sindhughosh class designed as a part of Project 877. 
  • The Sindhughosh class is basically the replica of the KILO class of the Soviet Union. It can launch missiles up to 220 km.
  • The Kilo class submarines have a displacement of 2,300 tonnes, a maximum diving depth of 300 metres, top speed of 18 knots, and are able to operate solo for 45 days with a crew of 53.

Additional Information:

  • The Sunda Strait is between the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java. This strait connects the Java Sea with the Indian Ocean. 
  • The Malacca Strait connects the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) and the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean).It is the shortest sea route between the Middle East and East Asia.
