N.R. Narayana Murthy Career

Since his early years, Narayana Murthy exceptionally academically genius. He held a strong fascination for Mathematics and Physics, and his enthusiasm for learning in these domains was insatiable.

Murthy’s journey commenced as a Research Associate under a faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad. Following this, he served the role of chief systems programmer. During this tenure, he contributed to pioneering projects such as India’s inaugural time-sharing computer system. He played a important role in crafting and implementing a BASIC interpreter for Electronics Corporation of India Limited.

His spouse, Sudha Murthy, is an educator, author, and philanthropist, also holding the position of chairperson for the Infosys Foundation. Narayana Murthy is the father of two children: a son named Rohan Murthy and a daughter named Akshata Murthy. In June 2013, Rohan began his journey at Infosys, working as an executive assistant to his father, but he left the company in June 2014.

In 2009, Akshata tied the knot with British politician Rishi Sunak, who later held the positions of MP for Richmond, Yorkshire, and subsequently assumed leadership roles within the Conservative Party, eventually becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

He initiated a venture called Softronics, but unfortunately, the company faced setbacks and closed down around eighteen months later. Subsequently, he became a part of Patni Computer Systems situated in Pune.

In 1981, Narayana Murthy, along with six fellow software professionals, embarked on the establishment of Infosys. With an initial investment of Rs 10,000, generously contributed by his wife Sudha Murthy, they laid the foundation for the company.

For a remarkable span of 21 years, Murthy held the position of CEO at Infosys, leading the company from 1981 to 2002.

He held the position of board chairman from 2002 to 2006, subsequently assuming the roles of Chairman of the board and Chief Mentor. His active involvement continued until August 2011 when he retired from the company, adopting the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus.

Narayana Murthy is also actively engaged as an independent director on the corporate board of HSBC. In addition, he has contributed his expertise as a director on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever, ICICI, and NDTV.

Narayana Murthy was called back from retirement on June 1, 2013, to lead the company once again. At the age of 67, he has willingly embraced the task of revitalizing the company.

He assumed the roles of an Additional Director and the Executive Chairman of the Board within the organization. Collaborating closely with the top management, he is actively devising strategies, including incentives like increased salaries for top achievers, aimed at enhancing the company’s performance.

With Akshata possessing approximately 39 million shares of Infosys, Rishi now holds the distinction of being the wealthiest Prime Minister in the history of the United Kingdom.
