CosmoCube Mission

Context: A proposed suitcase-sized CosmoCube satellite may use the Moon’s far side to study faint radio signals from the Universe’s earliest stages.

About CosmoCube Mission

CosmoCube Mission

  • CosmoCube is a proposed compact lunar-orbiting spacecraft designed to investigate the Cosmic Dark Ages and the subsequent period of Reionisation.
    • The mission is being developed by an international team led by researchers associated with the University of Cambridge.
  • Key Objectives
    • Study the Early Universe: CosmoCube aims to observe the period from about 380,000 years to 1 billion years after the Big Bang, covering the era before the first stars and the emergence of the modern Universe.
    • Map Hydrogen Emission: The mission seeks to create an intensity map of neutral hydrogen emission using the redshifted 21-centimetre line, providing information about the early Universe.
    • Explore New Physics: Observations could provide clues about dark matter, structure formation and other exotic physical processes that influenced the evolution of the early Universe.
  • Key Specifications
    • Lunar Far-Side Shielding: CosmoCube would operate around the Moon and use the far side as a natural shield against radio interference from Earth, including telecommunications, satellites and FM transmissions.
    • 21-Centimetre Radio Signal: The spacecraft would detect the extremely faint 21-cm hydrogen line, which carries information about conditions during the Cosmic Dark Ages and the transition towards the first stars.
    • Compact Spacecraft and Orbit: The suitcase-sized spacecraft is proposed to operate in an approximately 100-km lunar orbit, spending about 40 minutes behind the Moon during each two-hour orbit.
      • Over a proposed two-year mission, it could collect approximately 1,000 hours of observations from the radio-quiet environment.

CosmoCube could overcome Earth-based observational limitations because the ionosphere blocks relevant low-frequency radio waves, while terrestrial radio interference can overwhelm faint cosmological signals.

Nationwide Cloud and AI Skilling Initiative

Context: The NSDC, Cultus Education and AWS launched a nationwide initiative to equip youth, especially from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, with cloud and AI skills.

About the Nationwide Cloud and AI Skilling Initiative

  • The initiative aims to create an inclusive, future-ready workforce by providing online training in cloud computing and artificial intelligence across all States and Union Territories.
  • Implemented by: The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), with Cultus Education as the delivery partner and Amazon Web Services (AWS) providing training programmes and digital content.
  • Objective: To bridge the digital-skilling gap by providing 150,000 learners foundational cloud and AI literacy and 10,000 participants intensive, job-ready training.
  • Key Components
    • Foundational Digital Training: 150,000 learners will receive foundational AI and cloud literacy through AWS digital training content.
      • The online model enables youth from underserved regions to access globally relevant technical training without relocating to metropolitan cities.
    • AWS re/Start Programme: 10,000 selected participants will receive intensive, instructor-led training through the AWS re/Start programme.
      • Training covers cloud infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, programming, relational databases and AI fundamentals through practical exercises and hands-on laboratories.
      • Successful participants will earn AWS Certification and receive access to qualified interview opportunities with local employers.
    • National Hackathon: The programme will culminate in a National Hackathon, allowing learners to demonstrate cloud and AI solutions before industry leaders and potential employers.
      • The initiative therefore connects digital literacy  to advanced skilling , certification  and employment opportunities.

Garbhini Mitra Course

Context: The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) has launched the Garbhini Mitra Course (2026–27).

About The Garbhini Mitra Course

Garbhini Mitra Course

  • It is a training course to equip personnel to provide Ayurveda-based health education, lifestyle guidance, and community-level support to women during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Key Feature

  • Ayurvedic Foundation: Based on Garbhini Paricharya (antenatal care), Sutika Paricharya (postnatal care), and Garbhadhana Vidhi (pre-conception care).
  • Newborn and Safety Skills: Includes newborn massage, basic life support protocols, infection control, sanitisation, biomedical waste management and workplace safety.
  • Eligibility and Intake: 10+2 from any recognised board, minimum 18 years; 20 students per batch.
  • Duration and Mode: Six-month offline training program at AIIA, New Delhi.
  • Complementary Care: The Garbhini Mitra initiative complements, rather than replaces, clinical antenatal care.
    • Routine check-ups, diagnostic tests, and monitoring of blood pressure and hemoglobin remain essential.

Role of Garbhini Mitras

  • Garbhini Mitras are trained maternal wellness support personnel under the AIIA’s Garbhini Mitra program who assist women during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
  • Role: Provide health education, lifestyle/dietary guidance, wellness support, and emotional support.
    • Help with prenatal/postnatal care and newborn wellness.
    • Identify warning signs and facilitate timely referral to qualified doctors.

India’s First Non-GMO High-Expansion Popcorn Maize Hybrid

Context: India introduced its first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at Musunuru, Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh.

About Popcorn Maize

Popcorn Maize

  • Popcorn Maize: Zea mays everta is a specialized variety of maize used to make popcorn.
  • Unique Structure: Its kernel has a thick, moisture-resistant outer layer (pericarp) and a starch-rich interior.
  • Popping Mechanism: On heating, the moisture inside the kernel turns into steam, building pressure within the sealed kernel and causing it to pop.
  • Commercial Quality: High-expansion varieties produce a larger volume of popped corn, making them desirable for commercial use.

Key Features Of The Popcorn Maize Hybrid

  • Indigenous Development: Developed for Indian soil and climatic conditions, reducing dependence on imported popcorn hybrid technology.
  • Non-GMO: Produced through conventional breeding methods, including cross-pollination and selective breeding, without genetic modification.
  • Hybrid Vigor: Developed by crossing selected parent lines to combine desirable traits, resulting in an F1 hybrid with improved characteristics.
  • High Expansion: Produces larger popped volume, an important quality criterion for commercial popcorn.
  • Farmer Reach: The popcorn value chain covers 17,500+ farming families across 8 States and nearly 40,000 acres.

About Jojari River

Jojari River Pollution

  • The Jojari is a prominent seasonal watercourse of western Rajasthan and forms part of the Luni river system.
    • It is particularly important as the only major right-bank tributary of the Luni.
  • Source: The Jojari originates from the hills near Poondloo (Padlu) village in Nagaur district, Rajasthan.
  • Course: The river flows generally through the semi-arid plains of western Rajasthan, passing through areas of Nagaur, Jodhpur and Balotra.
    • It eventually joins the Luni River near Balotra, forming part of the broader Jojari-Bandi-Luni river system.
  • Key Features
    • The Jojari is a seasonal river, with its flow largely dependent on rainfall and local drainage.
    • It has faced severe contamination from industrial effluents and domestic sewage, particularly around Jodhpur.
    • Pollution has affected groundwater, agriculture, livestock and local communities along its downstream course.
  • Environmental Significance
    • The case highlights the need to protect riverine ecosystems, floodplains and ecological buffer zones from unregulated construction and industrial pollution.
    • It also demonstrates the application of Article 21’s protection of life and health in environmental matters.
