The basic IAS salary is moderate but as one starts gaining experience, they receive a higher salary. So, the salary of a new joinee is different from the salary of an officer serving as a cabinet secretary.

IAS is a category of civil servants who serve in the administrative machinery as bureaucrats. It is a prestigious position and hence receives very attractive monetary and non-monetary benefits.

The IAS salary structure is based on two criteria: their service grade and years of experience. Based on these two criteria, the pay commission decides their salary. Apart from basic pay, IAS salary also consists of Dearness Allowances, House Rent Allowances, Travel Allowances etc. All these together form the IAS salary structure.

  • Minimum Salary of an IAS Officer: An entry-level IAS Officer receives a minimum salary starting from ₹56,100, excluding TA, DA and other perks.
  • Highest Salary of an IAS Officer: The highest salary received by an IAS Officer is about ₹2,50,000. 
  • Latest Pay Structure of IAS Officer: The latest pay structure of an IAS Officer is based on the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission.

IAS Salary and Other Perks

Apart from salary, an IAS officer receives additional allowances and benefits. These are the perks that distinguish IAS officers from other government employees. The details of such benefits in addition to IAS salary are given below.

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): Dearness Allowance is aimed at negating the impact of inflation. It is revised regularly by the government.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): IAS officers receive monetary grants for their residential purposes. HRA depends on the city they serve and generally ranges between 8% and 24% of the basic pay.
  • Travel Allowance (TA): An IAS Officer receives TA along with the salary to cover travel costs for his/her official purposes.
  • Medical Allowance: Medical Allowance is given for the purpose of their medical treatment. 
  • Pension Benefits: IAS Officers enjoy lifetime pension and other retirement benefits as their job is permanent.
  • Leave Travel Concession (LTC): IAS officers receive some amount as LTC to travel to their hometown or other parts of India once or twice during their tenure.
