Survey on Computer Coding

Context: 

Recently a “multiple indicator survey” was conducted by the National Sample Survey Office, under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

About the Survey:

• The survey’s purpose is to keep track of India’s progress on various Sustainable Development Goals. 
  • The survey period was from January 2020 to August 2021.

• Methodology:

• • The survey assessed programming skills in nine levels, from “copy or move a file or folder” to “write a computer program using a specialised programming language”. 
  • The figures are based on self reported answers to each question.

Findings of the Survey:

• There are more young men and women in South India who can write computer programs using specialised languages, or code, than in other parts of the country.
• Performance of Various States:
  • Specifically, 9.8% of people aged 15-­29 in Kerala — the highest in India — were adept at programming, followed by Sikkim (6.8%), Tamil Nadu (6.3%), Karnataka (6.2%), Telangana (5.7%) and Andhra Pradesh (4.2%).
  •  The States near the bottom of the table included Bihar (0.5%), Chhattisgarh (0.7%), Assam (0.7%), and Meghalaya (0.2%).

• PAN India Level: Across India, 2.4% of people aged 15-­29 reported being able to code, and 1.4% of all people older than 15 years. 
• Rural-Urban Divide:The fraction was higher in urban (5.2%) than in rural India (1.3%), and similarly higher among men (3%) than women (1.8%)
