Balance to retain dignity of cricket & player needed 23 Jun 2023

Context:

The concerns raised in modern-day cricket revolve around multiple ethical issues, primarily associated with the financial elements of the sport and the influence of corporate sponsorship.

Some of the main ethical concerns in modern-day cricket:

  • Player Exploitation: In modern cricket, players often are auctioned off to the highest bidder, particularly in tournaments such as the IPL.
    • This practice commodifies players and can undermine their dignity and personal autonomy
  • Equity: The wealthier cricket boards, such as the BCCI, hold a lot of power, which can create inequities in the global game.
    • Smaller cricketing nations can struggle to compete or retain their players who may be lured by lucrative contracts offered by the wealthier boards or their associated leagues.
    • Also, it’s mentioned that the BCCI could use its wealth to invest in other sports or in broader cricketing infrastructure. but chooses not to.
  • Integrity of the Game: With the advent of shorter formats and increasing commercialization, there is a risk that the essence and spirit of the game may be lost.
    • This might include traditional skills, tactics, and the ability to sustain concentration over a long period, which are less valued in shorter, more commercial formats.
  • Role Models: With cricket players becoming celebrities, their actions and attitudes are closely watched by fans, especially younger ones.
    • If the conduct of the players is driven by financial gain rather than sporting integrity, it might send a wrong message to the young fans.
  • Betting and Corruption: Large sums of money involved in cricket can attract illicit activities such as betting and match-fixing. undermining the integrity of the sport and the trust of fans.
  • Commercialization and Player Welfare: Increasing commercialization of cricket has led to a packed international calendar.
    • Player burnout and long-term health issues are potential consequences, as seen with the Indian team’s performance in your example.
  • Lack of Investment in Grassroots Cricket: Despite the massive influx of money into cricket, there is a perceived lack of investment in grassroots cricket, especially in countries like India.
    • The development of cricket at the grassroots level is crucial for the future of the sport.

Conclusion:

The concerns raised point towards the need for finding a balance between financial interests and upholding the dignity, values, and spirit of cricket.
