Context:
The Union government recently introduced a Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
- This Bill proposes a new composition for the selection panel responsible for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners (ECs).
- The panel will now include:
- The Prime Minister, who will serve as the chairperson.
- The Leader of the Opposition, who will become a member of the panel.
- A Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.

Conclusion:
It is argued that the presence of CJI to be part of the committee selecting the CEC will enhance the trust of people in the Election Commission and help in deepening democracy.
