BIMSTEC was founded on June 6, 1997, when a regional conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand, which marked the inception of this organization. Together, they have a huge population of 1.73 billion people and a total economy worth US$4.4 trillion in 2022.

The Full Form of BIMSTEC is the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. The BIMSTEC grouping underwent a significant change during its First Summit in Bangkok on July 31, 2004. Prior to this, it was referred to as BIST-EC. This renaming marked an important milestone in the organization’s history, reflecting its evolution and expansion. As a result, BIMSTEC, which stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, came into existence. On June 6, 1997, a group of countries in the Bay of Bengal region came together in Bangkok to form a new organization called BIST-EC, which stood for Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand Economic Cooperation. Later, on December 22, 1997, during a special meeting in Bangkok, Myanmar joined the group, leading to a change in its name to ‘BIMST-EC,’ where the ‘M’ now represented Myanmar along with Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
In 1998, Nepal started participating as an observer in the activities of this regional cooperation group. Then, in February 2004, both Nepal and Bhutan upgraded their status to become full members.
Fast forward to July 31, 2004, a significant milestone was reached when the group held its first Summit. At this meeting, the organization was officially renamed ‘BIMSTEC,’ which stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. This transformation marked a significant step in enhancing collaboration among the member countries in various sectors for the economic and technical development of the Bay of Bengal region.

Sectors 7 to 13 were introduced during the 8th Ministerial Meeting in Dhaka in 2005, while the 14th sector was added in the 11th Ministerial Meeting in New Delhi in 2008. Each sector has a lead country responsible for its coordination and development.
