Chief Ministers of Gujarat

According to the Indian Constitution, the Governor is the de jure head of the state while the Chief Minister is the de facto executive authority. The process of appointing the Chief Minister and other Ministers is covered in Article 164 of the Indian Constitution. In the year 1960, the state of Gujarat was established through the division of the then-Bombay state along linguistic lines. Jivraj Narayan Mehta became Gujarat’s first Chief Minister, marking the first instance of an Indian National Congress member leading the state post its establishment.

The formation of Gujarat occurred on May 1, 1960, following the partition of the Gujarati-speaking regions from the larger Bombay State due to the Mahagujarat agitation. Jivraj Narayan Mehta, affiliated with the Indian National Congress, undertook the role of Gujarat’s first Chief Minister. Subsequently, a transition took place in Gujarat: Vijay Rupani and his Cabinet vacated their positions, paving the way for the swearing-in of Bhupendra Patel as the new Chief Minister.
