Indian Diaspora

Context:

Indians form a big chunk of diaspora in Canada with a majority of immigrants, foreign students, and workers in Canada are Indians.

  • Recently, India suspended visa services in Canada. This has reportedly led to anxiety among students, their families, and other travelers who aspire to go to Canada.
  • Indians form the largest share of immigrants, foreign students, foreign workers, and other groups in Canada.
    • India overtook China and the Philippines to form the highest share of immigrants in Canada in the 2016­2021 period.
  • The share of ethnic/cultural groups who belong to the second or third generation shows that the share of Punjabis is highest, followed by Tamils and Gujaratis.
  • According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the countries with over 1 million overseas Indians are given below:
