Context:
Recently, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has unveiled its highly anticipated list of the ‘Most Liveable Cities in the World 2023’.
About Global Liveability Index 2023:
- Involved Parameters: Healthcare, Culture, Environment, Education, and Stability, this ranking offers insights into the cities that excel in providing an exceptional quality of life.
- Healthcare scores demonstrated the most significant improvement, followed by gains in education, culture and entertainment, and infrastructure.
- However, stability experienced a slight decline due to civil unrest and a rise in crime rates in some cities.
- Top Ranked Cities:
- Vienna (Austria), Copenhagen (Denmark), Melbourne and Sydney (Australia)
- Bottom Ranked Cities:
- Algiers (Algeria), Tripoli (Libya) and Damascus (Syria)
- Among Asian countries, only Osaka in Japan features among the top 10 most liveable countries at number 9.
- The survey noted that while Asia-Pacific cities made some of the biggest gains, the western European cities have slipped down the 2023 rankings.
- This year’s index highlighted that the average livability score has increased from 73.2 to 76.2 out of 100 compared to the previous year.
