Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary, located in Latehar district, Jharkhand, is India’s first and only wolf sanctuary.

About Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary

Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary

  • Established: 1976.
  • Location: Within the Palamau Tiger Reserve, Jharkhand.
  • River: Burha River flows through the sanctuary.
  • Purpose: Dedicated to conservation of Indian Grey Wolves.

Indian Grey Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes)

  • Scientific Name: Canis lupus pallipes.
  • Range: Southwest Asia and Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, etc.).
  • Habitat: Sal forests (Shorea robusta).

Other Wolf Species Found in India:

  • Tibetan Wolf (Canis lupus chanco) — Himalayan regions.
  • Himalayan Wolf (Canis lupus himalayensis) — Debated as a separate ancient lineage; found in high-altitude Ladakh and Spiti.

Distinct Features

  • Den Sites: Located farther from human settlements.
  • Prefer higher slopes and thicker shrub cover for dens.
  • Denning season coincides with Sarna faith practice:
    • Sarna Dharma followers avoid entering Sal forests from November to February.
    • Provides a natural, undisturbed breeding environment.
  • Behavior:
    • Smaller packs compared to other wolf subspecies.
    • Less vocal.
    • Primarily nocturnal hunters (dusk to dawn).
  • Ecological Role: Maintains ecological balance by regulating prey populations as a top predator.
