At an event celebrating the National Sports Day, The Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment launched “Retired Sportsperson Empowerment Training” (RESET) Programme.
About The RESET Programme
- Aim: To empower and support the retired sports persons and athletes on their career development journey by providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills and making them more employable.
- Purpose: The skills and experience of retired athletes will be of benefit to the new generation of aspiring athletes as it will act as a foundation for nurturing future champions, contributing to the growth of sports in India and fostering nation-building.
- Eligibility: Retired Athletes aged from an active sports career between the age of 20-50 years, are eligible to apply for courses under RESET Programme
- Winners of an International Medal/participants in international events
- National medallists/State medallists
- Participants in competitions recognized by National Sports Federations/Indian Olympic Association/Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
- Levels: The programmes initially will be on two levels based on educational qualifications ie. Class 12th and above and Class 11th and below.
- Implementing Institute: The pilot phase of the RESET Programme will be led by the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE)
- Learning Mode: The programme will be offered in hybrid mode which will combine self-paced learning through a dedicated portal, along with on-ground training and internship.
- The Internships will be provided in sports organizations, sporting competitions/training camps, and leagues.
- Placements: Assistance, guidance for placements and entrepreneurial ventures, etc. will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

National Sports Day
- National Sports Day is celebrated annually on 29th August in honour of the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand.
- Major Dhyan Chand played a key role in India’s first hat-trick of Olympic gold medals, winning at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Summer Olympics.
- The government of India decided to celebrate his birth anniversary as National Sports Day annually since 2012 to honour his significant contributions,
- The day is also marked by the need to promote sports and physical fitness across the nation
- The President of India often presents prestigious sports award, one of them being, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour in the nation.
