Since its inception in 1999, following the Global Financial Crisis of 1997-98, the G20 has convened annually. Leaders have been gathering for the G20 Leaders’ Summit since 2008, with a calendar filled with ministerial meetings, sherpa meetings, working groups, and special events throughout the year.

In 2023, India takes the helm as the G20 presidency holder, offering an events calendar on the official Indian Government’s website. Indonesia presided over the G20 in 2022, culminating in the release of the G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration on November 16, 2022. Looking ahead, Brazil is set to host the G20 in 2024, followed by South Africa in 2025.

The Leaders’ Summit stands as the pinnacle of the G20 process, the culmination of a year-long journey involving Ministerial Meetings, Working Groups, and Engagement Groups.

In acknowledgment of the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across all facets of society and recognizing the limitations faced by many nations in addressing this crisis, the Indonesian Presidency has outlined three primary pillars for its G20 2022 Presidency:

  1. Global Health Architecture: The emphasis here lies in ensuring equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, recognizing the vital role of global health.
  2. Sustainable Energy Transition: A commitment to promote sustainable and inclusive economic development through the active participation of micro-, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and advancing the transition towards sustainable energy sources.
  3. Digital Transformation: Embracing the digital economy and its transformative potential as a driver of growth and innovation.

Indonesia’s vision through these pillars is to lead in facilitating fair access to COVID-19 vaccines, fostering sustainable and inclusive economic development through the engagement of MSMEs, and embracing the digital economy.
