Context: Recently, President Droupadi Murmu announced Gallantry award winners, comprising 80 Armed Forces personnel, including 12 posthumous on the eve of the 75th Republic Day.

About Gallantry Award Winners 2024

Gallantry Awards in India are a way to honor acts of bravery and sacrifice by personnel from various forces and civilians. These awards are announced twice a year, on Republic Day and Independence Day, to recognize exceptional acts of courage.

Eligibility
  • Personnel from various armed forces, reserves, territorial armies, militias, and civilians serving under their orders.
  • These awards are for acts of bravery or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea, or in the air.
  • Eligible recipients include personnel from the armed forces, reserves, territorial armies, militias, nursing services, civilians, and police forces.
  • These awards are for acts of bravery or self-sacrifice not in the face of the enemy.

 

About Gallantry Award Winners at 75th Republic Day

President Droupadi Murmu announced 80 gallantry awards, including six Kirti Chakra and 16 Shaurya Chakra,  53 Sena Medals, including seven posthumous, one Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) and four Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) for India’s armed forces.

  • Kirti Chakra: India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award after Ashok Chakra.
  • Shaurya Chakra: India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
Nao Sena Medal
  • Awarded for such individual acts of exceptional devotion to duty or courage as have special significance for the Navy. 
  • Awards may be made posthumously.
Vayu Sena Medal
  • It is a military medal, usually awarded in peacetime for service to the Indian Air Force. 
  • It has also been awarded for bravery in the face of enemies in times of conflict.
  • It may be awarded posthumously and Barr is authorized to award the Vayu Sena Medal afterward. 
  • It was established by his President of India on 17th June 1960 and has been honored since 1961.

Historical Background of Gallantry Awards 

  • Established: Param Vir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, and Vir Chakra were established on January 26, 1950, but deemed effective from August 15, 1947.
    • The Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Class-II, and Class-III were instituted on January 4, 1952, and later renamed as Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra in January 1967.
  • Order of Precedence: Param Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Vir Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.

Mahavir Chakra
  • Circular silver medal, 1.38 inches in diameter, with a five-pointed heraldic star on obverse. “MAHA VIR CHAKRA” on reverse.
  • Half-white and half-orange
  • Additional bars for subsequent acts of bravery. Miniature medal for each added bar when worn alone.
Vir Chakra
  • Circular silver medal, 1.38 inches in diameter, with a heraldic star and Chakra on obverse. “VIR CHAKRA” on reverse.
  • Half blue and half orange
  • Additional bars for subsequent acts of bravery. Miniature medal for each added bar when worn alone.
Ashoka Chakra
  • Circular gold gild medal, 1.38 inches in diameter, with Ashoka’s Chakra on obverse. “Ashok Chakra” on reverse.
  • Green with orange vertical line
  • Additional bars for subsequent acts of gallantry. Miniature medal for each added bar when worn alone.
Kirti Chakra

Selection Process Gallantry Award Winners

Recommendations and Initiation
  • Armed Forces: The process begins when a unit in the Armed Forces initiates a case for a gallantry award. 
    • If the act of gallantry is deemed fit, it is recommended to the respective Services Headquarters. 
    • Commanders in the chain of command play a crucial role in endorsing these recommendations.
  • Civilian Citizens: For civilian citizens, recommendations are solicited by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). 
    • MHA calls for recommendations from State/UT Governments, Central Ministries/Departments, Central Armed Police Forces, Railway Protection Force, etc. 
Scrutiny and Review
  • Armed Forces: By the Awards Committee at Services Headquarters. 
    • These proposals are then forwarded to the Ministry of Defence with the approval of the respective Service Chiefs.
  • Civilian Citizens: By a Sub-Committee within the MHA. 
    • Their recommendations are then sent to the Ministry of Defence with the approval of the Union Home Secretary.
Timing of Recommendations
  • Generally, there should be a time limit of not more than two calendar years from the date of the heroic act.
Central Honours & Awards Committee (CH&AC)
  • All recommendations are reviewed and considered by the Central Honours & Awards Committee (CH&AC). 
  • Composition: The CH&AC comprises the Raksha Mantri (Minister of Defence), the three Service Chiefs, and the Defence Secretary. 
    • For civilian awards, the Home Secretary is also a member of the committee.
Presidential Approval and Announcement
  • Once approved by the President, the gallantry awards are officially announced on the occasions of the Republic Day and Independence Day, recognizing and honoring acts of bravery and sacrifice by individuals from the Armed Forces and civilians.
