IPS Training is conducted every year for candidates who have successfully passed all the levels of UPSC IPS exams and are allotted IPS positions. The goal of the extensive IPS training program is to give IPS officers the abilities and skills they need to operate on their job. 

IPS Training courses are conducted annually at Hyderabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy. The IPS Training program ensures that IPS officers are well-prepared for their roles in maintaining law and order, and in serving the nation.

IPS Training Location:

Candidates who are prepared to join the Indian Police Service and have cleared all phases of the Civil Services examination are eligible for IPS training. The job of converting new IPS officer trainees into skilled police officers will be held at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA)

The Indian national institute for training officers in the Indian Police Service is called the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), located in Hyderabad. Before the IPS officer trainees were sent to their various state cadres to perform their tasks, this was the top IPS Training Location in the nation.

IPS Training Time Duration

IPS officers are responsible for upholding peace, law, and order throughout the nation. The total time duration of IPS training is 2 years including all four phases of the program. Usually, the 3-month IPS training (foundation course) is conducted at Mussoorie with the other civil service aspirants, after which the IPS trainees are sent to Bharat Darshan. There are two phases to the second portion of the IPS training. It is carried out at Hyderabad’s National Police Academy. Between the two IPS training periods at the IPS academy, the IPS officers are also required to complete a district training of 6 months within their cadre.

The Objective of IPS training:

IPS training for the Basic Course aims to:

  • Increase the IPS officers’ capabilities by combining competency development, orientation, and sensitization.
  • Give IPS officers the expertise and comprehension they require to perform their duties well.
  • Assist IPS officers in acquiring the community, organizational, and professional qualities necessary to succeed as leaders.
  • Encourage IPS officers to have suitable attitudes, human values, and behavior in both their personal and professional lives.
  • Enhance the general character, routines, self-control, soft skills, standards, values, and manners of IPS personnel.
  • Make IPS probationers the heads of police districts and stations.

Four Stages of IPS Training:

The IPS training program is divided into four sections: Foundation Course, Phase I Training, District Practical Training, and Phase II Training. IPS training locations for all four IPS training phases vary at every stage.

  • Foundation Course: Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie
  • Phase I Training: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad
  • District Practical Training: Respective UPSC cadre
  • Phase II Training: SVPNPA, Hyderabad

IPS Training: Foundation Course

The foundation course of IPS training and all other civil services training is held at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA). New trainees for Group A Central Services and All India Services are subject to the LBSNAA Training Period. It assists the recently hired Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in acquiring the necessary skills, abilities, and mindset to carry out their duties.

The Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service are just a few of the public services that benefit from LBSNAA training coordination and cooperation.

This IPS training course promotes the officer trainee’s overall growth. At LBSNAA, the foundation course of IPS training lasts for three months. Indian Administrative officials continue their training in the LBSNAA academy after completing the foundation course, while IPS officers and other officers transfer to their separate training centers.

Phase I IPS Training: SVPNPA, Hyderabad

The National Center for IPS training is located in Hyderabad and is called the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). For those aspiring to become IPS officers, this is the best IPS training location. At the SVPNPA in Hyderabad, IPS officers receive 11 months of Phase I IPS Training. The IPS officer trainees are sent to their respective cadres to carry out their duties after completing their training at SVPNPA.

IPS Training: District Practical Training

After completing the first phase of IPS training for 11 months at SVPNPA, IPS officers are required to spend six months training in a district that belongs to their cadre. This course of IPS training is called District Practical Training. At the respective cadre, this IPS training takes place in between two phase I and II IPS training stages.

Phase II IPS Training: SVPNPA Hyderabad

As previously stated, there is one more stage of IPS training after the District Practical Training program for IPS officers. Thus, following six months of District Practical Training, the IPS officers return to SVPNPA, Hyderabad, to begin Phase II IPS training. Here, IPS officers will learn advanced policing techniques, leadership, and ethics.
