UPSC has released the UPSC NDA 2 2024 Application Form on its official website (www.upsc.gov.in) The online application link for NDA 2 2024 became active on 15th May 2024, and will remain open until 4th June 2024. The students must first register for the OTR before they can proceed to complete the NDA application form.

NDA Exam 2024 Exam Pattern

The NDA Exam 2024 has two subject papers for its written phase. The two subjects are Mathematics, and General Ability Test (GAT). There are 120 Questions in the Mathematics Paper, while there are 150 questions in the GAT Paper. Time allotted for each paper is 150 minutes or two and half hours.

NDA Exam 2024 Eligibility Criteria

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has detailed the eligibility criteria for the NDA Exam  2024 in its official notification available at upsc.gov.in. 

The NDA Exam 2024 eligibility criteria are divided into 2 main sections: age limit and educational qualifications. 

Age Limit: Only candidates who are unmarried male/female and are born not earlier than 2nd January 2006 and not later than 1st January 2009 are eligible.

Educational Qualification: 

  • For Army Wing of NDA: Candidate should be 12th Class pass or have passed an equivalent examination.
  • For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy (INA): Candidates should be 12th Class pass with Maths, Physics, and Chemistry or should have passed an equivalent examination.

General Ability Test (GAT)

Part A – English

 

  • The question paper in English will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English and workman like use of words. 
  • The syllabus covers various aspects like : Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and  cohesion  in  extended  text to test the candidate’s proficiency in English
Part B – General Knowledge
  • The question paper on General Knowledge will broadly cover the subjects : Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Social Studies, Geography and Current Events.- 
  • The syllabus given below is designed to indicate the scope of these subjects included in this paper. 
  • The topics mentioned are not to be regarded as exhaustive and questions on topics  of  similar  nature not specifically mentioned in the syllabus may also be asked.

Important Note: Out of maximum marks assigned to part ‘B’ of this paper, questions on Sections ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’, ‘E’ and ‘F’ will carry approximately 25%, 15%, 10%, 20%, 20% and 10% weightages respectively.

NDA Exam 2024 Marking Scheme – Written Exam

  • Negative Marking: There will be a penalty for wrong answers. For each incorrect response, one-third (0.83 for Maths and 1.33 for GAT) of the marks assigned to that question are deducted.
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: Candidates need to score the minimum qualifying marks separately in each paper as determined by the Commission.

NDA 2 2024 Exam Selection Process

The NDA 2 2024 Exam selection process will involve four stages to select the suitable candidates for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Below is the overview of the NDA 2 2024 Exam process:

1. NDA Exam 2024 Written Examination:

    1. The written exam comprises two papers: Mathematics and the GAT (General Ability Test).
    2. Mathematics is of 300 marks and the GAT is of 600 marks, making the entire written exam of 900 marks.
    3. Candidates will be selected if they score above the cut-off marks in both papers to qualify for the SSB process, which is the next stage.
    4. There will be a negative marking of one-third of the marks for each of the answers which will be answered incorrectly​.

2. NDA Exam 2024 SSB Interview:

    1. Candidates who will pass the written examination will be called for the 5 day Services Selection Board (SSB) interview process.
    2. The Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a 5-day process divided into two stages:
      1. Stage 1, which includes the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT).
      2. Stage 2, which includes the psychological tests, group testing officer tasks, personal interviews, and a final conference​.

3. NDA Exam 2024 Medical Examination:

    1. Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a comprehensive medical examination at designated military hospitals.
    2. The medical tests ensure candidates meet the health standards required for service in the armed forces​.

4. NDA Exam 2024 Final Merit List:

    1. The final selection will be based on the combined scores of the written exam phase and the SSB interview phase.
    2. Only the candidates who will be declared medically fit and score sufficiently high on the merit list will be selected for training at the NDA.

Important guidelines for the Height and Weight Standards in NDA Exam 2024

  1. Candidates who are overweight or underweight according to their height will not be considered fit.
  2. Candidates who have undergone any surgical correction of vision, or use corrective devices like spectacles or contact lenses, or have undergone laser surgery, are not eligible for the Air Force.
  3. Candidates should not have knock knees, flat foot, or varicose veins.
  4. For Male candidates, the chest should be well developed with a minimum range of expansion of 5 cm.
  5. Body Mass Index (BMI): The candidate’s BMI should be within the acceptable range as determined by the medical board.
  6. Relaxations: There may be some relaxation in height and weight standards for candidates belonging to certain regions or tribal communities as per the UPSC guidelines.
  7. Verification: Height and weight measurements are taken during the medical examination as part of the SSB (Services Selection Board) process after qualifying the written examination.

Preparation Tips for NDA Exam 2024 – SSB

Following is the Preparation Strategy for the NDA Exam 2024: 

1. Understand the SSB Procedure

The SSB interview spans over five days and is divided into different tests:

  • Day 1: Screening Test (includes Intelligence Test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test – PPDT)
  • Day 2: Psychological Tests (Thematic Apperception Test – TAT, Word Association Test – WAT, Situation Reaction Test – SRT, Self-Description Test – SD)
  • Day 3: Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO – includes Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Tasks, Half Group Tasks, Individual Obstacles, Command Task, and Final Group Task)
  • Day 4: Personal Interview
  • Day 5: Conference

2. Enhance Your Mental and Physical Fitness

Mental Fitness:

  • Current Affairs: Stay updated with national and international news. Read newspapers, watch news channels, and follow credible news websites.
  • General Knowledge: Focus on history, geography, politics, and defence-related topics.
  • Aptitude and Reasoning: Practice logical reasoning and quantitative aptitude through various competitive exam books.

Physical Fitness:

  • Daily Exercise: Engage in regular physical activities like running, swimming, and exercises to build stamina.
  • Obstacle Training: Familiarise yourself with the type of obstacles in the Individual Obstacles task. Practice if possible.
  • Team Sports: Participate in sports like football, basketball, or volleyball to improve team spirit and coordination.

3. Develop Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs)

SSB emphasises assessing 15 OLQs:

  • Effective Intelligence: Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Reasoning Ability: Logical thinking and decision-making.
  • Organising Ability: Ability to prioritise and execute tasks.
  • Power of Expression: Clear and confident communication.
  • Social Adaptability: Ability to adapt to different social situations.

  • Sense of Responsibility: Owning up to duties and responsibilities.
  • Initiative: Taking proactive actions.
  • Self Confidence: Belief in one’s abilities.

  • Determination: Perseverance to achieve goals.
  • Courage: Bravery to face challenges.
  • Stamina: Physical and mental endurance.

4. Preparation for Each Day for SSB of NDA Exam 2024

Day 1: Screening Test

  • Intelligence Test: Practice verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions.
  • PPDT: Develop a habit of quickly perceiving and creating coherent stories from pictures. Practice group discussions to improve articulation and confidence.

Day 2: Psychological Tests

  • TAT: Practice writing stories based on pictures within a limited time.
  • WAT: Enhance quick thinking by practising word association exercises.
  • SRT: Develop responses to various situational questions reflecting quick and logical decision-making.
  • Self-Description: Write an honest self-description covering aspects like strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations.

Day 3: GTO Tasks

  • Group Discussion: Improve public speaking and debate skills.

Day 5: Conference

  • Formal Attire: Dress appropriately in formal attire.
  • Calm Demeanour: Maintain a calm and confident demeanour while interacting with the panel.

NDA Exam 2024 FAQs

The NDA 2024 syllabus includes Mathematics with topics like Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Geometry, Statistics, Probability, etc. and General Ability Test (GAT) with topics including English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Events.

As per the notification released by the UPSC, there are 400 vacancies for the NDA 1 Exam 2024, and 404 vacancies for the NDA 2 Exam 2024.

You can apply for the NDA 2024 exam starting from 15th May 2024, to 4th June 2024, for NDA 2. The Application form for NDA 1 was started on 20th December 2023 and it closed 9th January 2024.

The salary of a National Defence Academy (NDA) officer in India starts at approximately ₹56,100 per month for a Lieutenant, with additional allowances. This increases with rank, experience, and postings, significantly enhancing the overall compensation package.
