Rashtriya Gokul Mission: The Rashtriya Gokul Mission, initiated in December 2014, aims to enhance and conserve indigenous bovine breeds, focusing on improving milk production and productivity through scientific means, including superior nutrition and farm management. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, announced the mission under the National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development during the 12th Five Year Plan.
Recently, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying announced a scheme to provide employment to more than 50 lakh farmers under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM). The RGM includes a subsidy scheme for cow, buffalo, pig, chicken, and goat breeding farms and silage-making units, with a 50% subsidy from the Government of India. Additionally, farmers can avail a 3% interest subvention on the loan amount under the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) scheme.
Implemented since December 2014, the mission focuses on developing and conserving indigenous bovine breeds. The scheme continues under the umbrella of Rashtriya Pashudhan Vikas Yojna from 2021 to 2026, with a budget outlay of Rs. 2400 crore.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission will be implemented through the State Implementing Agency (SIA viz Livestock Development Boards).
Under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan stimulus package, the AHIDF of Rs. 15000 crore has been set up to incentivize investments in dairy processing, meat processing, value addition infrastructure, and animal feed plants by individual entrepreneurs, private companies, MSMEs, Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs), and Section 8 companies.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission is centered around the establishment of integrated cattle development centers known as Gokul Grams. These centers will be strategically placed in native breeding areas and close to urban centers to accommodate urban cattle.

The Rashtriya Gokul Mission scheme is implemented by the State Implementing Agency (SIA) through Livestock Development Boards. All agencies involved in indigenous cattle development can avail themselves of the benefits offered by this initiative. With the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, India aspires to witness a positive transformation in both the cattle and milk production industries.
Gokul Grams are integrated indigenous cattle centers aimed at promoting scientific rearing and conservation of indigenous cattle. These centers focus on using indigenous breeds for high-genetic-merit bull propagation, adopting modern farm management practices, and promoting common resource management, including the economical utilization of animal waste. India, with 14.5% of the world’s cattle population, houses 83% of indigenous cattle. The Rashtriya Gokul Mission plays a vital role in enhancing the sustainability and productivity of these breeds.
