Cropping Seasons in India: Kharif, Rabi and Zaid

India grows various crops including food, fibre, vegetables, fruits, spices, and condiments. With three distinct cropping seasons (rabi, kharif, and zaid) the country cultivates a wide variety of crops ranging from grains to fruits and vegetables. From the winter-sown rabi crops like wheat and barley to the monsoon-dependent kharif crops like paddy and cotton, each season brings its own agricultural bounty, shaping the livelihoods of millions.

Different Cropping Seasons in India

  • There are three distinct crop seasons in the northern and interior parts of the country: kharif, rabi, and zaid.

A. Kharif Season 

    • The word Kharif means autumn in the Arabic language.
    • It largely coincides with the Southwest Monsoon and These crops are harvested in September-October
      • Tropical crops cultivated.
    • It is also known as monsoon crops or autumn crops.
    • Variability of the Kharif Season: The Kharif season varies depending on the crop and region, typically beginning as early as May and ending as late as January. 
      • Crops are usually sown at the onset of the first rains during the advent of the southwest monsoon season and harvested at the end of the monsoon season.
    • Example: rice, cotton, jute, jowar, bajra, maize and tur.
  • Major Rice-growing States: Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
  • Aus, Aman, and Boro: Three Crops of Paddy are Grown in a Year in Assam, West Bengal, and Odisha, three crops of paddy are grown in a year.

Rabi Season 

  • It begins with the onset of winter in October-November and ends in March-April. 
  • Low temperature facilitates the cultivation of temperate and subtropical crops such as wheat, gram, barley, mustard and rapeseed.
  • Factors Contributing to the Success of Rabi Crops: Winter precipitation from western temperate cyclones aids crop production and 
    • The Green Revolution further enhanced production.
  • Major Wheat Producers: Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, are crucial for wheat production.

Zaid 

  • Short Season: It is a short-duration summer cropping season beginning after the harvesting of rabi crops, mainly from March to June.
  • These crops require warm, dry weather as a major growth period and longer day length for flowering
  • Example: Cultivation of watermelons, cucumbers, vegetables and fodder crops during this season on irrigated lands
