The exam is divided into Three Stages: the preliminary exam, the main examination, and the interview/personality test. UPSC GS Paper 1 and GS Paper 2 are part of the preliminary test. The GS Paper 2 is also referred to as the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test).

A key component of the UPSC preliminary exam is the CSAT, which was introduced in 2011. Clearing this exam is a requirement for Mains eligibility. An important factor in establishing a candidate’s fitness for the civil service is the UPSC CSAT.
