Every year on June 19, World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is observed to increase public awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). World Sickle Cell Day 2024 will continue to focus on increasing public knowledge about the disease, promoting early diagnosis, and improving the quality of care for those affected. Let’s understand more about the World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2024 and its theme.
The World Sickle Cell Day 2024 is observed on June 19, 2024, to promote awareness of the SCD condition and blood donation. World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2024 is recognized by the United Nations and the World Health Organization. In recognition of the worldwide impact of sickle cell disease, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in December 2008 designating June 19th as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The day is an important reminder of the struggles that people with sickle cell disease confront daily and the pressing need for action.
On World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2024, the United Nations and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) want to inspire all organisations while continuing their commitment to bringing the sickle cell community together. To commemorate World Sickle Cell Day 2024, the SCDAA invites everyone to join forces under the theme “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally.”
Raising Awareness: SCD affects millions of people globally, especially African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian descent. World Sickle Cell Day educates about SCD, its symptoms, complications, and the importance of genetic counselling and testing.
Advocacy for Better Healthcare: World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2024 advocates for better healthcare resources, emphasising the need for accessible and affordable healthcare services for SCD individuals.
Promotion of Research and Innovation: World Sickle Cell Day promotes research and collaboration to enhance understanding, diagnosis, and management of SCD. The day also fosters the development of better treatments like gene therapy and new medications.
Prevention and Early Intervention: World Sickle Cell Day emphasises early detection and intervention for individuals with SCD, promoting screening programs, newborn screening initiatives, and genetic counselling to identify carriers and provide appropriate support.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of genetic red blood cell diseases. It modifies red blood cells’ morphology, which impacts their ability to distribute oxygen throughout the body. The protein known as haemoglobin, which carries oxygen, is found in red blood cells. Healthy red blood cells are in round shape. Red blood cells with sickle cell disease have a genetic abnormality that causes them to take on a crescent or “sickle” shape.
