{"id":105611,"date":"2024-05-01T19:19:16","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T13:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=105611"},"modified":"2024-05-01T19:19:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-01T13:49:16","slug":"issar-2023","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/issar-2023","title":{"rendered":"Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Context:<\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) for 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compiled by <\/span><b>ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been released.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Key Highlights of Report:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Global Scenario:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Trend of Space Object Population:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It indicates a <\/span><b>steady growth in the space object population, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as reflected by the <\/span><b>maximum number of on-orbit payload deployments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the<\/span><b> maximum number of launches in 2023.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is indicative of <\/span><b>better accessibility to space<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the increasingly <\/span><b>diverse applications of space technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in day-to-day life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 3143 objects originating from 212 launches and on-orbit break-up events were added to the space object population in 2023 compared to 2533 objects from 179 launches in 2022.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Need for Space Traffic Management (STM): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operating in an environment inhabited by a growing population of active satellites requires STM.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, unlike air and marine traffic, <\/span><b>no universally accepted framework for STM exists at present, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hence the<\/span><b> resolution of an on-orbit close approach <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between two active satellites is carried out on case-by-case by inter-operator coordination.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Indian Scenario:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Milestones in India&#8217;s Satellite Launches:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Since the beginning of the Indian space era, a total of <\/span><b>127 Indian satellites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including those from private operators\/academic institutions, have been launched till 31st December 2023.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indian Deep Space Missions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, <\/span><b>three Indian deep space missions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were also active by the end of 2023, namely, <\/span><b>Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter, Aditya-L1, and the Propulsion Module of Chandrayaan-3.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Re-entry of Indian Satellites:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A total of 21 Indian satellites have re-entered the atmosphere till the end of 2023. Ex- Megha-tropiques-1 underwent controlled re-entry through an immensely challenging exercise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rocket Bodies: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 82 rocket bodies from Indian launches were placed in orbit till 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Successful launces of ISRO:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the year 2023, all seven launches of ISRO were successful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These included SSLV-D2\/EOS7, LVM3-M3\/ONEWEB_II, PSLV-C55\/ TeLEOS-2, GSLV-F12 NVS-01, LVM3-M4\/ Chandrayaan-3, PSLV-C56\/ DS-SAR, and PSLV-C57\/Aditya L-1.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Space Object Proximity Analysis (SOPA) for Satellites:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-105598 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/53-66324406aa826.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/53-66324406aa826.webp 717w, https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/53-66324406aa826-300x126.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>About:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ISRO regularly carries out analyses through IS4OM\/ ISTRAC to predict close approaches by other space objects to Indian space assets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Collision Avoidance Manoeuvres (CAM): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of any critical close approach, CAM are carried out to safeguard the operational spacecraft.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of close approach alerts received and the number of <\/span><b>CAMs executed by ISRO was also the highest to date.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way Forward:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 For <\/span><b>sustainable space activities,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>holistic approach needs to be taken to catalyse the space sector growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It must be recognised by all space actors that, unlike terrestrial activities, any <\/span><b>activity in space has potentially global and far-reaching implications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>near-Earth space is a finite resource <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that must be <\/span><b>utilized responsibly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to harness it for societal benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Additional reading:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/isro-indian-space-research-organisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISRO<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context: The Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) for 2023 compiled by ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM) has been released.
