style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Airports Authority of India (AAI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has called for expressions of interest to prepare a detailed project report for the Indian Single Sky Harmonized Air Traffic Management (ISHAN) initiative, centered in <\/span><b>Nagpur.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move comes amidst a<\/span><b> significant surge in aviation industry growth,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with domestic passenger traffic expected to <\/span><b>double by 2030.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About Indian Single Sky Harmonized Air Traffic Management (ISHAN) Initiative:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Aim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To<\/span><b> refine and strengthen air traffic management (ATM).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Significance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will help to<\/span><b> streamline operations, enhance capacity, and alleviate congestion,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> efficient routing, and reduced flight times benefiting both airlines and passengers.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single continuum FIR would yield a lot of benefits in terms of <\/span><b>safety, efficiency, user satisfaction, reduced carbon footprint and optimum manpower utilisation.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Challenges Ahead: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project will require<\/span><b> uniform technology implementation, changes in the existing processes, retraining of air traffic control officers and policy formulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 all of which will require<\/span><b> time and investment.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Need to do:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Holistic Restructuring: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have the most efficient utilization of airspace in terms of air traffic capacity, the airspace route structure and sector boundaries are required to be restructured holistically that will benefit all stakeholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Minimisation of Existing Gaps: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surveillance and communication gap areas have to be minimised to reap the benefits of the Single Sky Harmonized ATM, such as reduced separations (minimum distance that aircraft must fly apart) and fuel-efficient flight paths.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>A Thorough Study: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the implementation of ISHAN, a thorough study of current and projected air traffic growth, and the challenges related to the management of increased air traffic, would have to be carried out.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Present Arrangements:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flight Information Regions (FIRs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Currently, Indian airspace is divided into <\/span><b>four<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> FIRs<\/span><b> (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a sub-FIR, each managed separately.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unifying these FIRs under a single authority in Nagpur is projected to improve efficiency, safety, and seamlessness in air traffic operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100.299%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%; border-style: solid; border-color: #000000; background-color: #b8a5d987;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>About Airports Authority of India (AAI):<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>A Statutory Body:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a statutory body under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Civil Aviation.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Establishment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was constituted by an Act of Parliament and came into being on 1st April, <\/span><b>1995,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>merging the erstwhile National Airports Authority and the International Airports Authority of India.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Mandate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has responsibility <\/span><b>for creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both on the ground and air space in the country.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Achievements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AAI&#8217;s <\/span><b>successful implementation of Automatic Dependence Surveillance System (ADSS),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using indigenous technology, at Calcutta and Chennai Air Traffic Control Centres, gave India the distinction of being <\/span><b>the first country to use this advanced technology in the South East Asian <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:
