color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">OHC is the total amount of heat stored by the ocean, and EEI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the balance between incoming energy from the Sun and outgoing energy from the Earth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Impact of OHC: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased OHC <\/span><b>prevents ocean layers from mixing or deoxygenating, lowering the preformed oxygen content of near-surface high-latitude<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waters reaching the deeper layers of oceans.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it is still unclear whether deoxygenation is accelerating in response to increased OHC, <\/span><b>it can otherwise negatively impact the health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of coastal and large marine ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Average increase in ocean acidification:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The average global surface ocean pH has declined continuously by\u00a0 0.017-0.027 pH units per decade in the open ocean since the late 1980s.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Inadequate Data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: In 2024, only 638 stations recorded ocean pH levels, resulting in inadequate current coverage and a time series that is not long enough to determine trends and data gaps due to the lack of observations in all areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Other sources of Acidification:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coastal waters can turn acidic due to natural processes, such as <\/span><b>freshwater influx, biological activity, temperature change and climate patterns like El Nino\/Southern Oscillation (ENSO).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sea level Rise: It continued to rise in 2023, with the global mean sea level from 1993 to 2023 increasing at a rate of 3.4 +\/-0.3 mm\/yr.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Recommendation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world needs to improve the space-based and in situ observing systems for monitoring sea level rise at global, regional, and coastal scales.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recent Trends in Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) Technologies: mCDR technologies involve<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> techniques that capture carbon dioxide from the air and store it durably within the ocean ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Examples:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It includes altering the chemical composition of seawater so that oceans absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or adding nutrients such as iron to encourage the growth of microscopic plankton that can sink to the seafloor and be stored for centuries or longer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Challenges: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report noted widespread technical, environmental, political, legal, and regulatory challenges in the increased usage of mCDR technologies, with many unknowns about the unintended consequences of these new technologies\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coastal Blue Ecosystem Restoration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report questions the effectiveness of restoring or expanding coastal blue carbon habitats such as mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and tidal saltmarshes to increase carbon sequestration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.pw.live\/govt-entrance-exams\/upsc-books?utm_source=SEO&#038;utm_medium=PW+Live&#038;utm_campaign=UPSC+CSE+Books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check Out UPSC CSE Books From PW Store<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100.005%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 146.021%;
