{"id":116741,"date":"2024-06-26T19:50:42","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T14:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=116741"},"modified":"2024-06-27T13:51:27","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T08:21:27","slug":"space-variable-objects-monitor","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/space-variable-objects-monitor","title":{"rendered":"Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> first astronomy satellite jointly developed by China and France named Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was launched into orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province, China recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About The Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM)<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-116817 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/unnamed-99-667d1ff4c142d.webp\" alt=\"Space Variable Objects Monitor\" width=\"503\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/unnamed-99-667d1ff4c142d.webp 640w, https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/unnamed-99-667d1ff4c142d-300x169.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 503px) 100vw, 503px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Sino- French Collaboration: The Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the<\/span><b> first astronomy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">satellite jointly developed by China and France.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two countries had <\/span><b>together developed and launched an oceanographic satellite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018 also<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Payloads:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The satellite is a<\/span><b> 930-kg satellite consisting of four payloads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 two developed by the French and two by the Chinese.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The ECLAIRs and MXT telescopes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Built by France, It will detect and capture the GRBs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>The Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GRB)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Built by China, It will measure the spectrum of GRBs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>The Visible Telescope (VT):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Developed by China, It will detect and observe visible emissions produced immediately after a GRB.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Mission Objective: <\/b>S<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VOM primarily will<\/span><b> look for GRBs across the universe and will measure and study their electromagnetic radiation properties.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The satellite will also use the bursts to <\/span><b>unlock mysteries regarding the evolution of the universe, and gravitational waves, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as\u00a0 both gravitational waves and GRBs originate from the collision of neutron stars.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Significance:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Better Detection:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As per the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV,<\/span><b> SVOM\u00a0 is the most powerful satellite yet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will study the gamma-ray bursts and play an important role in astronomical explorations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Early Universe: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SVOM\u00a0 aims to <\/span><b>see the earliest gamma-ray bursts that took place in the farthest parts of the universe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will help scientists learn more about the universe\u2019s childhood and its evolution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Searching for Kilonavas: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SVOM satellite will search for kilonovas as well\u00a0 to study the stellar evolution, and to <\/span><b>obtain\u00a0 answers about the origins of heavy elements like gold and silver in the universe<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pw.live\/batches\/upsc?utm_source=seo+upsc+batch&#038;utm_medium=seo+upsc&#038;utm_campaign=seo&#038;utm_id=upsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enroll now for UPSC Online Course<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; color: #000000;\">When a GRB erupts, it is briefly the brightest source of cosmic gamma-ray photons in the observable Universe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Origin: <\/b>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hey are known to occur in distant realms of the universe (resulting\u00a0 from some of the universe\u2019s most explosive events such as the<\/span><b> birth of black holes and neutron star collisions)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> can erupt with a quintillion (a 10 followed by 18 zeros) times the luminosity of the Sun.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Types:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are two types of GRBs,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Short GRBs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u00a0 are a result of the <\/span><b>collision of either two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole, r<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esulting in a black hole and last for <\/span><b>less than two seconds<\/b><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Kilonavas: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, short GRBs are followed by kilonovas, ie.<\/span><b> It is a\u00a0 blast of electromagnetic radiation\u00a0 that is produced by the radioactive decay of chemical elements.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The decay can lead to the generation of heavier elements like gold, silver, and platinum.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Long GRBs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: They are produced due to the<\/span><b> explosive deaths of massive stars.
