400;\">defines Food Insecurity as, when people do not have adequate physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious foods that meet their dietary needs and preferences for an active and healthy life.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food insecurity can be experienced at different levels of severity, <\/span><b>when someone is severely food insecure, they have run out of food and gone a day or more without eating.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Present Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/global-report-on-food-crisis-2024\/\">Global Report on Food Crisis 2024<\/a>, nearly 282 million people faced high levels of acute food insecurity in 59 countries in 2023, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with extreme weather being the second-most significant factor driving the food crisis<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proportion of people facing acute food insecurity has remained persistently high for four consecutive years, at almost 22 per cent of those assessed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Drivers of Food Insecurity:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Climate Change:\u00a0 <\/b>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he 6th Assessment Report of the IPCC concludes that <\/span><b>climate change is the key driver of Food Insecurity as it is changing precipitation and temperature patterns <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(floods and droughts) and increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events<\/span><b> affecting food security by reducing agricultural production.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><b>Weather extremes were the main driver for 18 countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with over 72 million people facing high levels of acute food insecurity because of such extreme weather events.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Poverty: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poverty is a leading cause of food insecurity. People with limited financial resources may struggle to afford nutritious food, leading to inadequate diets and hunger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Conflict and Violence:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Armed conflicts, wars, and civil unrest <\/span><b>disrupt food production, distribution, and access. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflict-induced displacement often results in food insecurity for affected populations.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wars in Ukraine has caused the price to rise for Wheat Flour and cooking oils.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Natural Disasters:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters can destroy crops, infrastructure, and food storage facilities, leading to food shortages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Economic Shocks: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic crises, such as recessions or currency devaluations, can affect food prices and income levels, making food less affordable for vulnerable populations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Crop and Livestock Diseases:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Disease outbreaks affecting crops and livestock can devastate food supplies and livelihoods for farmers and herders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100.201%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%;
