{"id":118223,"date":"2024-07-06T19:41:18","date_gmt":"2024-07-06T14:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=118223"},"modified":"2024-07-08T13:38:55","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T08:08:55","slug":"african-swine-fever","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/african-swine-fever","title":{"rendered":"African Swine Fever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>outbreak of African Swine Fever (highly contagious swine disease) was reported<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a private farm at <\/span><b>Madakkathara panchayat in Thrissur district of Kerala.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Precautionary Measures being Taken For African Swine Fever<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Culling: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The district animal husbandry officer has been<\/span><b> ordered\u00a0 to cull these 310 pigs and bury them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which will be conducted by a team of doctors, livestock inspectors and attendants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Marked Disease Surveillance Area:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The area within a <\/span><b>1-km radius of the affected farm has been declared a disease-affected area, and the area within a 10-km radiu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s has been declared a disease surveillance area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prohibition:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The<\/span><b> transportation of pork <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the affected areas, the<\/span><b> operation of such farms, and the movement of pigs, pork, and feed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the affected areas to other parts of the district have been prohibited until further orders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tracing movement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Animal Husbandry department will investigate the transportation of pigs from the a<\/span><b>ffected farm to other farms in the last two months.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>There will be strict checks at checkposts and other entry points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Thrissur district to prevent the illegal transportation of pigs and pork from Thrissur or other areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pw.live\/batches\/upsc?utm_source=seo+upsc+batch&#038;utm_medium=seo+upsc&#038;utm_campaign=seo&#038;utm_id=upsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enroll now for UPSC Online Course<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About African Swine Fever<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with devastating effects on pig populations and the farming economy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Mortality Rate: It can reach to about 100%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Resistance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus is<\/span><b> highly resistant in the environment, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning that it can <\/span><b>survive on clothes, boots, wheels, and other materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also survive in various pork products<\/span><b>, such as ham, sausages or bacon.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Spread: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the<\/span><b> virus does not infect humans,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they can unwittingly be a carrier of the virus across borders if adequate measures are not taken.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Hotspots of the disease:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> African Swine Fever traditionally<\/span><b> occured mainly in Africa with the only endemic area in the European Union (EU) being the Italian island of Sardinia.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However since 2017 the disease has also been reported in Central and Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> African Swine Fever can be spread through:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Direct contact with infected pigs,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faeces or body fluids<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Indirect contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via <\/span><b>fomites <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as equipment, vehicles or people who work with pigs between pig farms with ineffective biosecurity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Pigs eating infected pig mea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t or meat products<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Biological vectors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is <\/span><b>spread by the ticks of the species Ornithodoros.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Symptoms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High fever; Decreased appetite and weakness; Red, blotchy skin or skin lesions; Diarrhea, vomiting, or both; Coughing and difficulty breathing; Abortions or sudden death<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is <\/span><b>no treatment or vaccine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so the best way to protect pigs is by prevention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Impact:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Food security: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pork meat is one of the primary sources of animal proteins, accounting for <\/span><b>more than 35% of the global meat intake <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and cause serious problem for food security worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Biodiversity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This disease affects not only domestic farmed pigs, but also wild boars, including native breeds thus is a concern for biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100.234%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 138.173%;
