Peninsula.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About Cyclones<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclones are <\/span><b>big, swirling masses of air rotating around a centre of low pressure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a <\/span><b>powerful natural phenomenon characterized <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><b>strong winds and heavy rainfall.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>It is a low-pressure area in the atmosphere in which winds spiral upward<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Condition for Formation for tropical cyclone: Heat, Air, and Forces<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Temperature: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warm sea surface temperature<\/span><b> above 27 degrees Celsius.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Supply of Warm Air: Large and continuous #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the <\/span><b>first cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>August since 1976.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Between 1891 and 2023:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Only <\/span><b>three cyclonic storms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formed in the <\/span><b>Arabian <\/b><strong>Se<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>a<\/strong> during August (in 1976, 1964, and 1944), according to the IMD.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Naming: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name <\/span><b>Asna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been given by <\/span><b>Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Path : <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deep depression o<\/span><b>ver the Kachchh coast <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and adjoining a<\/span><b>reas of Pakistan and the Northeast Arabian Sea\u00a0<\/b><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It moved <\/span><b>westward<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and intensified into <\/span><b>cyclonic storm &#8216;Asna&#8217;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lay centred at<\/span><b> 1130 hours over the same region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>190 km west-northwest of Bhuj (Gujarat).<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Usual Path:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tropical cyclones generally <\/span><b>do not cross the equato<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r due to the <\/span><b>Coriolis effect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is responsible for the <\/span><b>rotation of cyclone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Coriolis effect is <\/span><b>weakest <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <\/span><b>the equator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and increases as you move towards the poles.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This weak effect near the equator makes it <\/span><b>difficult for cyclones to cross<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from one hemisphere to the other.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Deep Depression vs Cyclone: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A deep depression is a low-pressure system with wind speeds ranging <\/span><b>from 52 kmph to 61 kmph,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while a cyclone has wind speeds between <\/span><b>63 kmph and 87 kmph.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Geographically Rare: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is considered <\/span><b>geographically rare <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it <\/span><b>originated over land in Rajasthan,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an area far from the <\/span><b>typical oceanic origins of cyclones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system then <\/span><b>moved into the Arabian Sea, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which generally <\/span><b>sees fewer cyclones compared to the Bay of Bengal, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly during the month of August.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Why More Cyclones Occur In The Bay of Bengal Than In The Arabian Sea?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>There are more cyclones in the Bay of Bengal than in the Arabian Sea for several reasons:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Bay of Bengal is a shallow embayment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Bay of Bengal is more shallow than the Arabian sea so there is<\/span><b> more heat transfer from the water to the air.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This increases the <\/span><b>potential for moisture and instability, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which are necessary <\/span><b>ingredients for cyclone formation.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Surrounding Landmass:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bay of Bengal is surrounded by<\/span><b> land on three sides<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which generates <\/span><b>additional moisture and instability.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The low-lying coastal regions often <\/span><b>get inundated when the storm makes landfall.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bay of Bengal has a <\/span><b>much larger area than other water bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the region.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><b>makes it easy for a storm to dissipat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e and <\/span><b>West Bengal is one of the most active areas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for <\/span><b>tropical cyclone formation in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Landlocked Sea of Arabian Sea:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sea is<\/span><b> partially landlocked<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it is bordered by <\/span><b>Oman, Iran, Pakistan, India, and the Arabian Peninsula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The partial landlocked system of the <\/span><b>sea makes it more saline in nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> sea is also cooler than the Bay of Benga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l, which makes i<\/span><b>t less prone to cyclones.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Bigger River Discharge in Bay of Bengal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large rivers like the <\/span><b>Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Irrawaddy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discharge warm fresh water into the<\/span><b> Bay of Bengal, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which keeps the<\/span><b> surface layer warm and less saline<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This warm water helps in the <\/span><b>formation and intensification of cyclones.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Less Convective Activity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Arabian Sea has much l<\/span><b>ess convective activity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the <\/span><b>pre-monsoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is<\/span><b> relatively less prone to cyclogenesis.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>northeast monsoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> dry continental air ends up cooling the Arabian Sea <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the post-monsoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of cyclones in the<\/span><b> Arabian Sea <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is thus about <\/span><b>half of that over the Bay of Bengal in both seasons.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D<\/span><b>eeper and Narrower:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>Arabian Sea is deeper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so the waves are <\/span><b>not as high as in the Bay of Bengal.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Arabian Sea is <\/span><b>much narrower than the Bay of Benga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l, which means that <\/span><b>cyclones have a harder time forming.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bay of Bengal\u00a0 wide expanse of shallow <\/span><b>water heats up more quickly than deep water, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">providing the <\/span><b>necessary conditions for storms to form.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Minimum Temperature Requirement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A sea surface <\/span><b>temperature of 27 degrees Celsius <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>above<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is needed for a<\/span><b> low-pressure system to intensify into a cyclone.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the sea surface temperature in the <\/span><b>Bay of Bengal is 28-30 degrees Celsius<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is around <\/span><b>27-28 degrees Celsius in the Arabian Sea<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s <\/span><b>colder (below 26 degrees Celsius) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the west-central <\/span><b>Arabian Sea and very warm (above 32 degrees Celsius) in the Gulf of Aden.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential
