{"id":135654,"date":"2024-10-04T19:11:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-04T13:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=135654"},"modified":"2024-10-08T17:53:21","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T12:23:21","slug":"classical-language-status-approved","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/classical-language-status-approved","title":{"rendered":"Classical Language Status Approved for Five Languages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Cabinet approved classical language status for five more languages i.e. <strong>Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Pali, and Prakrit.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Revised Criteria for Classical Language Status<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Earlier classical languages:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Sanskrit, and Odia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Linguistics Expert Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revised the criteria for classical status in July 2024.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This committee includes representatives from the Union Ministries of Home and Culture and linguistic experts, chaired by the Sahitya Akademi.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>What are classical languages?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian classical languages, also known as <\/span><b>Shastriya Bhasha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, refer to languages with a deep historical background, rich literary traditions and a unique cultural heritage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These languages have significantly<\/span><b> contributed to the intellectual and cultural development of the region,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with their texts offering valuable insights into various domains like literature, philosophy and religion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pw.live\/batches\/upsc\/pw-only-ias?utm_source=seo+upsc+batch&#038;utm_medium=seo+upsc&#038;utm_campaign=seo&#038;utm_id=upsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enroll now for UPSC Online Classes<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Criteria For Classical Language Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Culture has rules that must be followed in order to be classified as a classical language in India:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ancient origin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The language should have high antiquity of its early texts\/recorded history over a period of 1,500-2,000 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Literary heritage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The language should contain a body of ancient literature or texts that is considered a valuable heritage by generations of speakers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"vc_table_green\"><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.8996%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; border-style: solid; border-color: #000000; background-color: rgba(184, 165, 217, 0.53); text-align: left; vertical-align: middle;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt; color: #000000;\"><b>The Constitution of India contains several provisions regarding languages<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Eighth Schedule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Lists the official languages of India, which initially included 14 languages but has been expanded to 22 languages.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">These languages are recognized for use in government communication, examinations, and legislative matters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 <\/span><b>Classical Languages <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are listed under the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, whereas, Pali and the Prakrit(s) are <strong>designated \u201cclassical\u201d<\/strong> but not included in the 8th Schedule.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Article 120: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It states that business in Parliament is to be conducted in Hindi or English.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">However, members can speak in their native languages with prior permission of the Presiding Officer of the house.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Article 210: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It allows the use of Hindi, English, or the language of the respective state.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;
