About IMDRF:<\/b><\/p>\n

  • Nature of Grouping:<\/b> It is a <\/span>voluntary group<\/b> comprising <\/span>medical device regulators from various countries.<\/b><\/li>\n
  • Establishment: <\/b>The IMDRF was formed in <\/span>2011<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Goal of IMDRF: <\/b>To <\/span>accelerate international medical device regulatory harmonisation and convergence.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n
  • Foundation of GHTF: <\/b>The IMDRF builds upon the <\/span>foundational work of the Global Harmonization Task Force on Medical Devices (GHTF),<\/b> which previously worked on aligning medical device regulations globally.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Current Members: <\/b>The IMDRF includes regulatory authorities from the <\/span>U.S., Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Russia, China, South Korea, Singapore<\/b>, and the<\/span> World Health Organization (WHO).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    India’s Path to Membership: <\/b>In <\/span>2024,<\/b> the <\/span>Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO)<\/b>, under the <\/span>Ministry of Health and Family Welfare <\/b>applied for IMDRF affiliate membership, which was approved at the <\/span>26th session<\/b> in September 2024, Seattle, USA.<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Harmonisation and Reduction in Regulatory Compliance:\u00a0 <\/b>India’s membership <\/span>aligns its medical device regulations with global standards,<\/b> reducing regulatory complexities globally <\/b>\u00a0and improving public health protection.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Participation in Open Sessions: <\/b>India can now <\/span>participate in open sessions <\/b>to exchange information, discuss regulatory strategies, and<\/span> adopt IMDRF documents for its domestic framework.<\/b><\/li>\n
    • Enhanced Domestic Competitiveness: CDSCO\u2019s regulatory framework will be strengthened<\/b>, enabling it to handle emerging technical challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n

  • Previous Rank:<\/b> In the 2021 index, India was ranked 54th, but after a revision in WEF’s methodology, India’s rank for 2021 was adjusted to 38th.<\/span><\/li>\n
