{"id":14304,"date":"2023-02-07T14:25:45","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T08:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?p=14304"},"modified":"2023-06-26T06:28:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T00:58:50","slug":"neglecting-the-health-sector-has-consequences","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/neglecting-the-health-sector-has-consequences","title":{"rendered":"Neglecting The Health Sector Has Consequences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Context:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Budgets are important documents that reflect the priorities of the government and its commitment to providing equitable access to basic public goods such as health, education, and nutrition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Need to increase spending in health, education and nutrition:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the sustainable, long term growth of the country, expanding universal access to high quality education, healthcare and nutrition is imperative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study showed that <\/span><b>230 million Indians slid into poverty due to COVID-\u00ad19<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> ASER report<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows the abysmal state of education \u2014 many Class 5 students are unable to read a Class 2 textbook.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>NFHS\u00ad-5<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data show that among children aged below five years, 35.5% were stunted and 32.1% were underweight. Yet, the allocations for education and nutrition are stagnant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>budget for midday meals was reduced by 9%,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not counting inflation, even as data show a shift in enrolment from private to public schools with private schooling becoming unaffordable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Disease burden is rising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with non\u00adcommunicable diseases, mental health and geriatric care adding to the load of communicable diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India lacks adequate human resources, infrastructure and access to affordable diagnosis and treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>COVID-19 highlighting fault lines:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of financial risk protection, broken primary health system, absence of district hospitals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaotic regulatory framework<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government must invest in public health, promote scientific research, and expand health security.
