{"id":148200,"date":"2024-12-23T19:34:54","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T14:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=148200"},"modified":"2024-12-23T19:34:54","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T14:04:54","slug":"mumps-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/mumps-vaccine","title":{"rendered":"Mumps Vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With mumps cases steadily rising, Tamil Nadu has requested the Centre to include the <\/span><b>Mumps-Measles-Rubella (MMR) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine in the<\/span><b> Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Need of Mumps-Measles-Rubella (MMR) vaccine<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamilnadu\u00a0 currently records <\/span><b>150\u2013200 mumps cases monthly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 1,091 cases reported in 2023\u201324, a sharp increase compared to previous years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study in the<\/span> <b><i>Tamil Nadu Journal of Public Health and Medical Research<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighted that most cases occurred in children <\/span><b>aged 6\u20139 years (40%) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> under 5 years (33%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><b>women accounting for more than half of the total cases.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu\u2019s Directorate of Public Health has emphasized that including the mumps component in routine immunisation would help control its spread and mitigate risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the <\/span><b>State\u2019s UIP covers 11 vaccines for 12 preventable diseases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> including measles and rubella, with the MR vaccine introduced in 2017.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"vc_table_green\"><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.8996%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; color: #000000;\">Aims to provide free immunization against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Covers diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, rubella, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, rotavirus, Japanese encephalitis, pneumonia, and meningitis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Mission Indradhanush (MI):<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Launched in 2014 with focuses on improving immunization coverage in all states and union territories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;
