{"id":156155,"date":"2025-02-20T19:26:39","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T13:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=156155"},"modified":"2025-02-20T19:26:39","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T13:56:39","slug":"humpback-whale","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/humpback-whale","title":{"rendered":"Humpback Whale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 23-year-old Venezuelan kayaker, Adri\u00e1n Simancas, was<\/span><b> briefly engulfed by a humpback whale <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while kayaking in the<\/span><b> Strait of Magellan, Chile.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whale likely <\/span><b>mistook the kayak for prey and accidentally engulfed Simancas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before releasing him unharmed within seconds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About Whales\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-156157 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2010-67b734311dc78.webp\" alt=\"Humpback Whale\" width=\"448\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2010-67b734311dc78.webp 751w, https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2010-67b734311dc78-291x300.webp 291w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A whale is any of the larger species of aquatic mammals belonging to the order Cetacea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term whale can be used in reference to any cetacean,<\/span><b> including porpoises and dolphins,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but in general it is applied to those<\/span><b> more than 3 metres (10 feet) long.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Classification of Whales<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whales belong to two main families based on their feeding mechanisms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Baleen Whales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Includes species such as blue whales, humpback whales, and grey whales.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These whales use baleen plates to filter-feed on krill, plankton, and small fish.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Toothed Whales <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Includes species such as sperm whales, beaked whales, killer whales, and dolphins.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have teeth but do not chew; instead, they swallow their prey whole.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Can Whales Swallow Humans?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Baleen Whales: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having large mouths, baleen whales have<\/span><b> narrow throats,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preventing them from swallowing large objects, including humans.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A humpback whale\u2019s throat is roughly the <\/span><b>size of a human fist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it impossible to swallow a person.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Toothed Whales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Toothed whales have a <\/span><b>larger oesophagus than baleen whales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing them to swallow larger prey.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,<\/span><b> even toothed whales cannot swallow an entire human <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to the size limitations of their throats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Exception: Sperm whales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the only whales <\/span><b>with throats large enough to swallow a human<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, such occurrences are extremely rare due to<\/span><b> limited human-whale encounters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>species&#8217;s deep-sea habitat.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About Humpback Whales<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Physical Characteristics: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The humpback whale is named for the distinctive hump on its back. It has<\/span><b> long pectoral fins,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inspiring its scientific name<\/span><b> Megaptera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning <\/span><b>&#8220;big-winged&#8221;.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female humpback whales are<\/span><b> larger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than males.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Distribution and Migration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Humpback whales are<\/span><b> found in all oceans worldwide.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They undertake one of the<\/span><b> longest migrations of any mammal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, traveling between polar feeding grounds in summer and tropical or subtropical breeding grounds in winter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Unique Feeding Technique<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Humpback whales<\/span><b> use bubble net feeding, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a specialized technique where they exhale bubbles in a spiral pattern beneath dense patches of prey, trapping fish for efficient feeding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Conservation Status<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>IUCN Red List: Least Concern.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>CITES: Listed in Appendix I, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicating strict protection against exploitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Behavior and Communication<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Breaching : <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humpback whales frequently leap out of the water and crash back down, possibly for communication or parasite removal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Singing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Male humpback whales produce long, complex songs believed to play a role in mate attraction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"vc_table_green\"><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.6375%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 111.19%;
