projected increase in antibiotic use in livestock by 2040.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Key Highlights of the Future of Antibiotic Use in Livestock<\/b><\/span><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Projected Increase in Antibiotic Use<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global antibiotic use in livestock (AMUQ) was around 110,777 tons in 2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without intervention, this is expected to rise by 30% to 143,481 tons by 2040.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Potential Reduction Through Livestock Productivity Gains<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving animal health, management practices, and production efficiency <\/span><b>could reduce antibiotic use by up to 57% (to 62,000 tons) by 2040.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even moderate reductions in <\/span><b>antibiotic use intensity (AMUI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can significantly offset AMUQ increases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most significant reductions occur when <\/span><b>AMUI is cut by 50% and livestock biomass is reduced.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regional Contributions to Global Antibiotic Use<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Asia and the Pacific:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Expected to remain the largest contributor (64.6% of global AMUQ).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>South America<\/b><span use.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Challenges in Achieving Global Reduction Targets<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many regions, particularly those with growing livestock industries, face challenges in reducing antibiotic use while meeting rising food demand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply reducing livestock numbers has limited impact on overall antibiotic use.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About RENOFARM Initiative<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAO launched the <\/span><b>\u2018Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation\u2019 (RENOFARM) initiative.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Objectives:<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide policy (cattle, buffalo, mithun and yak), 74.26 million sheep, 148.88 million goats, 9.06 million pigs and about 851.81 million poultry as per <\/span><b>20th Livestock Census<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contribution in Economy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The livestock sector contributed 4.90 per
