recognition of foreign degrees, replacing the earlier system managed by the <\/span><b>Association of Indian Universities (AIU) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was<\/span><b> a non-statutory system.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"vc_table_green\"><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.7983%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; border-style: solid; border-color: #000000; (AIU)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Association of Indian Universities (AIU) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an<\/span><b> apex inter-university organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that promotes cooperation among Indian universities and represents their interests nationally and internationally.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Origin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Formed as the <\/span><b>Inter-University Board (IUB<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on <\/span><b>March 23, 1925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following the<\/span><b> Sadler Commission&#8217;s recommendation,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it was<\/span><b> renamed AIU in 1973<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after <\/span><b>registration as a society in 1967.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Objective: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIU aims <\/span><b>to foster collaboration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in education, research, sports, culture, and student welfare, while <\/span><b>protecting university autonomy and promoting Indian higher education globally.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Key Functions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: AIU facilitates<\/span><b> communication between universities and the government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, supports academic standards, promotes youth and cultural activities, assists with degree recognition, and organizes national and international educational events.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Key Provisions of the New Regulations<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Equivalence Certification: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign degrees, diplomas, and certificates will now be<\/span><b> certified as equivalent to Indian qualifications for higher education, research, and employment<\/b><span regulations apply broadly, but <\/span><b>exclude fields regulated by Statutory Councils (medicine, pharmacy, law, nursing, architecture)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recognition of Distance and Online Learning:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unlike earlier drafts, the final regulations recognize qualifications earned through distance or online education modes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Simplified Process:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An online portal will handle applications, with expert committees making recommendations within <\/span><b>10 working days and final decisions communicated within 15 days.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exemptions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No separate equivalence certificate is needed fo<\/span><b>r foreign qualifications earned through UGC-approved twinning, joint, or dual degree programs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Conditions for Granting Equivalence<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be recognized if they meet the academic standards of both the host country and the institution\u2019s home country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span Indian and foreign universities, especially in critical areas like technology, sustainability, food security, and healthcare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Need for Greater Efforts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A Parliamentary panel chaired by Sh. Digvijay Singh emphasized that the Department of Higher Education must intensify efforts to attract leading global universities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Current State of Foreign University Campuses in India<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Australian Universities at GIFT City:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Deakin University and University of Wollongong have set up campuses at <\/span><b>Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>UK Institutions in Progress:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The University of Southampton is planning a campus, and Queen\u2019s University Belfast and Coventry University have received approvals
