{"id":168302,"date":"2025-06-03T19:44:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&p=168302"},"modified":"2025-06-03T19:44:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:14:12","slug":"news-in-shorts-03-june-2025","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/news-in-shorts-03-june-2025","title":{"rendered":"News in Shorts: 03 June 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>District De-Addiction Centres (DDACs)<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Context: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Government is seeking proposals to set up<\/span><b> District De-Addiction Centres (DDACs) as part of its National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction in 291 \u201cgap\u201ddistricts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across <\/span><b>30 States and Union Territories.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>What Are DDACs?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>District<\/b> <b>De-Addiction Centres (DDACs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are government-supported facilities<\/span><b> aimed at helping people recover from substance abuse.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">States With the Highest Number of <\/span><b>\u201cGap\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Districts<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These districts are called <\/span><b>&#8220;gap districts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; because they don\u2019t have any existing government-supported facilities to treat or help people addicted to drugs or alcohol.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Chhattisgarh has the most districts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needing de-addiction centres (31 out of 33).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These DDACs would<\/span><b> \u201cconduct primary prevention activities\u201d<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Involves<\/span><b> organizing awareness programmes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among the <\/span><b>vulnerable and affected community.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify <\/span><b>children\/adolescents\/youth <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at risk of subst<\/span><b>ance use and offer them guidance.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Why Are DDACs Important?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has a growing drug addiction pr<\/span><b>oblem, with millions affected.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The 2017-18 National Survey estimated that:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1.18 crore children and teenagers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use drugs like alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and hallucinogens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Seven crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adults in <\/span><b>India use psychoactive substances<\/b><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Other Government Initiatives for Drug Rehabilitation<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Social Justice Ministry supports:<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">350 Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">74 Outreach and Drop-in Centres (ODICs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">46 Community-based Peer Led Initiatives (CPLIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><b>142 addiction treatment centres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are r<\/span><b>unning in government hospitals.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"vc_table_green\"><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.7997%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; Empowerment, Government of India.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Objective: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce drug abuse through education, rehabilitation, and community based service.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Aid-Washing<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Context: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a three-month blockade by Israel, entry of<\/span><b> aid in Gaza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the<\/span><b> Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has sparked debate over the <\/span><b>aid washing.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>What is Aid-Washing?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Aid-washing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to <\/span><b>the practice of using aid distribution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>improve a country\u2019s image <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while <\/span><b>not fully addressing humanitarian needs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Benefits of Aid-Washing\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Political Influence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments can use aid distribution to gain control over conflict zones.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>International reputation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It helps divert attention from controversial policies or actions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"vc_table_green\"><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 99.4988%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%;
