{"id":31983,"date":"2023-08-08T22:26:51","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T16:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=31983"},"modified":"2023-08-09T14:13:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T08:43:39","slug":"deepor-beel","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/deepor-beel","title":{"rendered":"Deepor Beel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Context:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various initiatives have been launched by the local population in order to <\/span><b>save the dying Deepor Beel.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>About Deepor Beel:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the critical <\/span><b>wetlands of the Brahmaputra Valley in lower Assam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>state\u2019s lone Ramsar site (declared in 2002)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, besides being a significant area for resident and migratory birds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has also been a patch for the<\/span><b> elephant movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for ages and the 4.14 square kilometre area of the beel has been declared a wildlife sanctuary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Threat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Despite being a wetland protected by law, it is subjected to <\/span><b style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">several anthropogenic threats,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including that from a railway track that runs parallel to the wetland and a waste yard in its periphery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Simang:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simang is a collective initiative by six women under which they have successfully transformed the <\/span><b>invasive weed, water hyacinths into beautiful artefacts and yoga mats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water hyacinths can rapidly multiply within a week, making it a persistent problem for the ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initiative has <\/span><b>provided employment to 38 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women from the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During COVID-19 pandemic, Simang was able to provide a <\/span><b>livelihood to its employees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who process raw materials from the Deepor Beel and weave the products in their own handloom.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Kumbhi Kagaz:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It focuses on <\/span><b>ecologically restoring Deepor Beel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while simultaneously <\/span><b>creating alternative livelihoods for the locals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Keotpara.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative <\/span><b>converts water hyacinths into 100 per cent biodegradable, chemical-free handmade papers.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbhi Kagaz efforts have significantly <\/span><b>improved the growth of makhana (prickly water lily) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the wetland, which has high commercial value.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/blog\/environment\/how-locals-are-trying-to-save-the-dying-deepor-beel-91050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>DTE<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context:\u00a0 Various initiatives have been launched by the local population in order to save the dying Deepor Beel.
