400;\">Recently,<\/span><b> National Green Tribunal (NGT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ordered the Assam government to disburse interim compensation to the victims of Baghjan oil and gas leak that displaced close to 9,000 people in 2020 in Tinsukia district of Assam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>More on News:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>About:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Baghjan 5 well is a purely gas-producing well in <\/span><b>Tinsukia district, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and is at an aerial distance of 900 metres from<\/span><b> the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was drilled by<\/span><b> Oil India Limited (OIL) in 2006.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It produces around 80,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) of gas from a depth of 3,870 metres.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Baghjan oil and gas leak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered as the<\/span><b> longest running oil spill in the country.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>National Green Tribunal (NGT) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appointed a committee led by <\/span><b>Justice (retired) BP Katakey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to investigate the leak, which revealed <\/span><b>many violations of environmental laws<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deeming the entire Baghjan oil and gas field as illegal in November 2020.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee submitted that<\/span><b> one-time compensation should be given to the affected villagers from Baghjan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on the quantum of losses faced by the affected water, damage shorelines <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and beaches, affect tourism and commerce, and pose fire hazards.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Prevention of Oil Spill:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indian Coast Guard is the Central Coordinating Authority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India for matters related to Oil Spill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promulgated by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is the<\/span><b> apex plan for responding to oil spill disasters in Indian waters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is applicable to shipping, ports, and oil industries.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It outlines the<\/span><b> roles and responsibilities of various agencies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and stakeholders in preventing and combating oil spills in different maritime zones, except in the <\/span><b>waters of ports and within 500m of offshore platform<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, refineries and associated facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It
