{"id":55601,"date":"2023-11-21T19:51:03","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T14:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=current-affairs&#038;p=55601"},"modified":"2025-02-13T11:29:51","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T05:59:51","slug":"climate-equality","status":"publish","type":"current-affairs","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/climate-equality","title":{"rendered":"Oxfam\u2019s Climate Equality Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Context:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, <\/span><b>Oxfam International <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released the \u201cClimate equality: A planet for the 99%\u201d report.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Climate Equality<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Crisis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The world faces <\/span><b>twin crises of climate breakdown and runaway inequality.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The r<\/span><b>ichest people, corporations and countries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are destroying the world with their huge carbon emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>People living in poverty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and countries in the <\/span><b>Global South<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are those impacted the hardest. <\/span><b>Unequal Impact on People<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Women and girls, indigenous peoples, people living in poverty and other groups experien<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cing discrimination are particularly at a disadvantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Unequal Safeguards:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The consequences of climate breakdown are felt in all parts of the world and by most people, yet only the <\/span><b>richest people and countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the wealth, power and influence to <\/span><b>protect themselves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100.2%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; border-style: solid; border-color: #000000; background-color: rgba(184, 165, 217, 0.53); text-align: left; vertical-align: middle;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>About Global South:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global South<\/span><b> refers to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> various countries around the world that are sometimes described as <\/span><b>\u2018developing\u2019, \u2018less developed\u2019 or \u2018underdeveloped\u2019.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Regional Spread: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the Global South countries are in the Southern Hemisphere, largely in Africa, Asia and Latin America.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Geopolitics<\/b> <b>Context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The term \u2018Global South\u2019 is not geographical. In fact, the Global South\u2019s two largest countries viz. India and China lie entirely in the Northern Hemisphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Its usage denotes a mix of political, geopolitical and economic commonalities between nations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><b><br \/>\nAlso Read: <\/b><a style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Key Findings of the Climate equality Report<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Annual Global Emissions: The emissions of the super-rich <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% was cancelling out the carbon savings from almost a <\/span><b>million onshore wind turbines.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>The richest 1% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the world\u2019s people emitted as much carbon as the <\/span><b>poorest 5 billion <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who make up <\/span><b>66% of the global population<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emissions of the 1% are set to be <\/span><b>over 22 times more than the safe limit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the emissions allowed if we are to stay below 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming) in 2030.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Unequal Burden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The countries that are <\/span><b>least responsible <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for global warming are suffering the <\/span><b>worst consequences <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the climate crisis and also the least able to respond and recover.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Most Vulnerable Countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Located in Africa, South Asia,
