Repurposing waste products into jet fuel to cut emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>About Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF):<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAF is a <\/span><b>biofuel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to power aircraft with similar properties to conventional jet fuel but with a smaller carbon footprint.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Significance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>a greenhouse gas emissions reduction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>around 70 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when compared to standard jet fuel over its life cycle.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAF&#8217;s lower carbon intensity makes it an important solution for reducing aviation GHGs, which make up <\/span><b>9%\u201312%.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is \u2018sustainable\u2019 because the raw feedstock does not compete with food crops or water supplies, or is responsible for forest degradation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Sources of Production:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a laboratory of the <\/span><b>Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has created fuel using different materials, such as non-edible and edible oils, and used cooking oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They used various sources, including palm stearin, sapium oil, palm fatty acid distillates, algae oil, karanja, and jatropha.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Efforts for Promoting the SAF:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u00a0Worldwide:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>CORSIA Program:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It aims to tackle aviation emissions by mandating offsetting of emissions exceeding 2020 levels and promoting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Clean Skies for Tomorrow Initiative: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Clean Skies for Tomorrow initiative by the <\/span><b>World Economic Forum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seeks to expedite the production and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>India:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has tied up with Boeing, Indigo, Spicejet and the three Tata Airlines \u2014 Air India, Vistara and AirAsia India \u2014 to support the production of SAF.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> CSIR-IIP pilot plant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Dehradun has produced 10,000 litres of fuel for the IAF to date.
