They are a militant group that has been fighting the <\/span><b>civil war in Yemen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Houthi Movement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It began in the 1990s against the dictatorship of <\/span><b>Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They now <\/span><b>control northern Yemen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and have a presence in most regions of the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Iran\u2019s backing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>Houthis are Shia,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are backed with arms and finances by the <\/span><b>Shia regime in Iran<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Support for Hamas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Though <\/span><b>Hamas is a Sunni organisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is backed by Iran because of their <\/span><b>mutual opposition <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the US and Israel. It is located between <\/span><b>Yemen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Arabian Peninsula, Djibouti,<\/span><b> and Eritrea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the African coast. It is also known as the <\/span><b>Gate of Tears.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is the route by which ships can reach the <\/span><b>Suez Canal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the south, itself a <\/span><b>major shipping lane.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Red Sea Crisis: Escalating Concerns for Global Security, Economy, and Human Lives<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Security Concerns: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the importance of the <\/span><b>Red Sea shipping channel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Red Sea crisis has risen to <\/span><b>a global security threat,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causing a serious impact on <\/span><b>international shipping and global supply chain security.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, <\/span><b>Yemeni authorities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have vowed vendetta against America and Britain for the air strike which has increased concerns about a potential <\/span><b>escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spilling over into the crucial waterway.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Economic Concerns:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sea crisis will lead to <\/span><b>higher energy prices and higher inflation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will have a greater negative impact on world economic growth, drag down the<\/span><b> economic recovery of Asian and European countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and cause huge losses to <\/span><b>Egypt and other Red Sea shipping stakeholders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>For instance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, around <\/span><b>12% of the world\u2019s trade<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passes through <\/span><b>the Red Sea and the Suez Canal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and after the Houthi attacks began, several major shipping and oil companies have announced they were <\/span><b>pausing movement on this East-West passage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>The Houthi attacks have forced more than 2,000 ships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to divert from the Red Sea since <\/span><b>November 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading ships to sail around the <\/span><b>Cape of Good Hope in South Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which takes much longer and leads to<\/span><b> higher fuel costs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Violation of International Laws: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attack by the US and UK is seen as a violation of <\/span><b>Yemen\u2019s sovereignty and international laws<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Russia and China <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused the Western allies of raising regional tensions and charged that the U.S. and British strikes <\/span><b>violated international law<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and raised regional tensions.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia has requested <\/span><b>an urgent UN Security Council meeting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in connection with US and UK strikes on Yemen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the US and UK defended the<\/span><b> legality of strikes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they launched against Yemen&#8217;s Houthis in<\/span><b> the U.N. The situation will be more complicated if it is subject to military intervention again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Impact on Asian Economies due to the Red Sea Crisis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Beyond the regional crisis points, the depletion of security in the Red Sea will have a global impact, specifically for Asian economies such as<\/span><b> India, Japan, South Korea, and China,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drawing in their interests as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>Red Sea Crisis: Impact on India&#8217;s Trade, Energy Security, and Overseas Citizens<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Impacts on Exports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The longer route is being used when exporting to Europe, the U.S. East Coast or even to countries in North Africa.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><b>Federation of Indian Export Organisations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, almost <\/span><b>90% of western hemisphere cargo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both inbound or shipped from India, that used to go through the Red Sea is now getting <\/span><b>re-routed through the Cape of Good Hope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Impact on Imports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Besides the extra time taken on account of the longer route, the developments could make <\/span><b>imports costlier <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and call for better inventory management.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Energy Security<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The instability in the Middle East could lead to a <\/span><b>spike in global oil prices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. India heavily depends on oil imports, and any significant price increase could adversely affect its economy.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>For instance,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Red Sea crisis could come in the way of any plans to<\/span><b> reduce pump prices of petrol and diesel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as India\u2019s<\/span><b> import dependence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (based on consumption) in the April-September 2023 period was <\/span><b>87.6%,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the government\u2019s Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Impact on Security of Merchant Vessels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Houthis are attacking international shipping vessels with <\/span><b>drone and missile attacks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the area.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>For instance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>December 2023,<\/b> <b>a Liberia-flagged merchant vessel<\/b> <b>(MV Chem Pluto)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carrying a crew of 22 (of which <\/span><b>21 were Indians)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, came under a <\/span><b>drone attack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around <\/span><b>220 nautical miles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> southwest of Porbandar, Gujarat, while it was on its way to New Mangalore.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Security of Indian Diaspora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The safety of the Indian diaspora <\/span><b>residing in the conflict zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becomes a priority.
