In 1833,<\/span><b> Lord Macaulay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foresaw the transformative potential of his educational policy, envisioning an educated Indian demanding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/upsc-notes\/european-union\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutions. <\/span><b>New political ideas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014nationalism and political rights\u2014which were alien to India, were brought through the assimilation of Western culture. These political associations were a precursor to 19th century<\/span><b> India\u2019s entry into modern politics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the secular interests brought together the diverse classes in contrast to these past religious and caste groups. It was the first time people of different cultures were associated with the political scene in India and changed everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%; border-style: solid; border-color: #000000; background-color: #e9ebe8;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It may be that the public mind of India may expand under our system until it has outgrown that system, that by good government we may educate our subjects into a capacity for better government; that having become instructed in European language, they may, in some future age demand European institutions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; Lord Macaulay, in the course of a speech before the House of Commons<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #ff6600;\"><b>Predecessors of the Indian National Congress<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Indian National Congress (INC) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not emerge as the first political organization in India, but it was the<\/span><b> first organized expression of the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/ncert-notes\/indian-national-movement\/\"><b>Indian national movement<\/b><\/a><b> on a pan-India scale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It had, however, many predecessors. This is how Rammohan Roy became the first Indian to be noticed by the English among those who were complaining about India\u2019s grievances on press freedom, Indian appointments in key positions, and even law codification.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he laid the groundwork, his associates formed the inaugural political association, the &#8220;<\/span><b>Bangabhasha Prakasika Sabha,&#8221; in 1836.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Bangabhasha Prakashika Sabha(1836)<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This organization was founded by Associates of Raja Rammohan Roy which included <\/span><b>Prasanna Kumar Thakur, Kalinath Chowdhury, Dwarakanath Tagore,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and others in 1836. <\/span><b>Gouri Sankar Bhattacharya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served as the president of the Sabha, while <\/span><b>Durga Prasad Tarkapanchanan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held the position of secretary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Objectives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Sabha aimed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to champion administrative reforms, advocate for increased Indian participation in the administration, and foster the dissemination of education.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>As a collective endeavor,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this association became a platform for discussions and actions geared towards addressing pressing issues and shaping a transformative vision for the governance and educational landscape of the time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Landholders\u2019 Society<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the year 1837, <\/span><b>Dwarkanath Tagore <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spearheaded the formation of the Landholders\u2019 Society (also known as the Zamindari Association), joined by other influential members such as <\/span><b>Radhakant Deb, Prasanna Kumar Tagore, Rajkamal Sen, and Bhabani Charan Mitra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-127814 alignright\" landscape, setting the stage for more extensive political engagement in the years to come.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Bengal British India Society<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1843, the visionary George Thompson formed the Bengal British India Society with Dwarkanath Tagore, Chandra Mohan Chatterjee, and 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Promoting Good Citizenship: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is aimed at inculcating among the Indian people the qualities of good citizenship, not just in informing them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Advocating Enlightened Governance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also aimed at enlightening the public on the state of governance so that they could bring about positive changes through legal and peaceful means.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fostering Colonial Cooperation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these initiatives were undertaken in an attempt to support the <\/span><b>governing monarch of England<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thus, promote cooperation and amiability within the colonial environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>British Indian Association<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1851, a significant development unfolded with the establishment of the British Indian Association, a merged entity comprising the Landholders\u2019 Society and the <\/span><b>Bengal British India Society.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Under the leadership of <\/span><b>Raja Radhakant Deb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as President and <\/span><b>Debendranath Tagore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Secretary, the Association became a formidable voice in articulating the concerns of the Indian populace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-127816 alignright\" and judicial functions,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduction in salaries of higher officers, and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abolition of salt duty, Abkari, and stamp duties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not all demands were fully met, the <\/span><b>Charter Act of 1853<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did partially address these concerns by incorporating provisions for the addition of six members to the governor-general\u2019s council for legislative purposes. Higher education had flourished in the <\/span><b>Presidential towns,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and people entering new professions were achieving new goals and status. During this period, a new elite emerged in every presidency, with similar aspirations and social standing.
