Ukraine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and mounting <\/span><b>military tensions between Beijing and its neighbours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Western Pacific.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India, which has been a<\/span><b> regular invitee to the G7 gatherings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the last few years, has a stake in developing deeper collaboration with the institutions of the so-called<\/span><b> &#8220;collective West&#8221;.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it confronts more demanding challenges on several global fronts, it is in the interest of the West to draw India into the <\/span><b>structures of global governance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">driven by the G7.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosted by the<\/span><b> Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has developed a great political rapport with Modi and has pushed for a <\/span><b>transformation of Italy&#8217;s ties with India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this G7 summit provides the best forum for rebooting India&#8217;s diplomacy in the PM&#8217;s third term.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a brief period, Meloni has emerged as one of the<\/span><b> influential leaders of Europe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and her political stock has risen with the recent success of her party in the polls to the European Parliament.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modi&#8217;s interlocutors in the democratic West appreciate the successful conclusion of the massive<\/span><b> Indian electoral exercise <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the salience of Modi&#8217;s re-election after two terms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a paradox, Modi&#8217;s reduced mandate has helped take the bite out of the arguments in the West about <\/span><b>India&#8217;s democratic decay.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majesty of the Indian voter has helped highlight, once again, the strong <\/span><b>self-corrective mechanisms in Indian democracy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not that the West does not dance with <\/span><b>non- democracies or authoritarian states.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America&#8217;s longstanding relationships with the <\/span><b>Pakistan army and the Chinese Communist Party<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provide compelling evidence to the contrary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: Mediterranean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Fasano summit also creates the basis for a more imaginative regional engagement between Delhi and Rome as well as India and the G7.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The connections between Mediterranean Europe and India&#8217;s extended neighbourhood in <\/span><b>Arabia and Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have now come into Delhi&#8217;s policy focus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India will also have much interest in the discussion on <\/span><b>food and energy security<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a major item on the G7 agenda in Italy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has flagged both issues in the wake of the<\/span><b> Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a <\/span><b>major consumer of energy and a leading producer of wheat,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India can shape the arguments in both domains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Migration is another issue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the top of Western concerns and India, as a major source of migrants, will have contributions to make.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delhi also brings a unique perspective that emphasises<\/span><b> curbing illegal immigration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and easing the flow of talent across borders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion on<\/span><b> issues of global governance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the G7 is likely to be overshadowed, however, by the effort to rally the West to <\/span><b>defend Ukraine against Russia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and counter the economic challenges presented by China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM Modi is <\/span><b>not attending the Ukraine peace conference
