Both the <\/span><b>supply side and the demand side <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the job market are important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pw.live\/batches\/upsc?utm_source=seo+upsc+batch&#038;utm_medium=seo+upsc&#038;utm_campaign=seo&#038;utm_id=upsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enroll now for UPSC Online Course<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the focus here is, unless otherwise specified, on the <\/span><b>demand for jobs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many young people are looking for jobs, but this is actually just <\/span><b>notional demand for jobs, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even though the job seekers are serious.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is only the demand backed by <\/span><b>proper skills, education, or some signal for potential contribution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the future that constitutes the effective demand for jobs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that such demand for jobs is <\/span><b>actually not very high.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason is straightforward, a reasonably <\/span><b>good quality of education <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is meaningfully available to only a<\/span><b> limited proportion of students.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, many employers, in various ways, <\/span><b>offer jobs to these good candidates.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The problem lies elsewhere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The huge youth unemployment is among those who do have a degree, diploma, or certificate but are<\/span><b> not meaningfully educated or skilled. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the perception of these students and their families is that they should have a good job.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, this is wishful thinking. This is the <\/span><b>harsh reality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is not to blame the students or their families and add to their discomfort in any way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fault lies in the<\/span><b> system of education <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that has evolved over time in India. We have a <\/span><b>crisis in education <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; notwithstanding the absence of any headlines on this in the media.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease lies in the education system. The h<\/span><b>uge youth unemployment is a symptom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this context, and it is this that gets media coverage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>What is the Way Out of all this?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to <\/span><b>restructure education <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehensively, though in a phased manner. While<\/span><b> higher public spending <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on education is important, it is not enough. We need other steps, such as finding a <\/span><b>substitute for the reservation policy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in educational institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The role o<\/span><b>f politics and ideology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in education needs to be cut.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also about the courses that are typically offered and those that are not offered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, the policy of<\/span><b> recruitment and promotion of faculty <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members needs to be seriously reconsidered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the policy of<\/span><b> allotment of land for educational institutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needs to be revisited.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to go well <\/span><b>beyond the Skill India programme <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as the <\/span><b>New Education Policy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The credibility of <\/span><b>certification of students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not receive much attention but it is very important. Since <\/span><b>high scores are unreliable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a signal of quality, there is often high unemployment even amongst those who score well in what are otherwise fair examinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, those who<\/span><b> score low are not necessarily incompetent. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scores of some are low due to a flawed examination system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another subset of <\/span><b>young people is talented, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but their potential often lies in areas like <\/span><b>stand-up comedy, jewellery designing, creating YouTube videos, etc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for which there is hardly any mainstream credible certification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, they are unemployed until they can somehow<\/span><b> find their way<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, hopefully, not quit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people think that there is <\/span><b>hardly any need to educate many students,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given the limited job creation on the supply side.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are missing the larger picture. <\/span><b>Jobs are indeed unavailable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for those who are not meaningfully trained.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But<\/span><b> some form of employment or occupation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does show up sooner or later if a candidate is good.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So education is useful, provided the <\/span><b>quality is not low <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the economic policy is such that we have a meaningfully permissive, enabling, and a well-regulated economy.
