{"id":132036,"date":"2024-09-14T23:04:36","date_gmt":"2024-09-14T17:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?post_type=editorial-analysis&#038;p=132036"},"modified":"2025-03-03T11:01:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T05:31:18","slug":"what-is-mission-mausam","status":"publish","type":"editorial-analysis","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/editorial-analysis\/what-is-mission-mausam","title":{"rendered":"Weather gods: On Mission Mausam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 11 September 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the \u20b92,000 crore Mission Mausam over two years, which focuses on significantly upgrading the equipment used by key organisations like the <\/span><b>India Meteorological Department, the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These organisations form the backbone of India\u2019s weather and climate forecasting capabilities across various time scales.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>What is Mission Mausam?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is slightly different from the National Monsoon Mission, launched in 2012 developed state-of-the-art weather and climate prediction models through intensive computing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Nodal Ministry:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mission Mausam is\u00a0 to be chiefly implemented <\/span><b>by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Aim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mission Mausam\u2019s objective is to <\/span><b>enhance India\u2019s ability to predict and respond to extreme weather events and the impacts of climate change.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its focus will be on improving observations and understanding to deliver highly-accurate and timely weather and climate information across temporal and spatial scales.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Instruments:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MoES will install 60 weather radars, 15 wind profilers and 15 radiosondes.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Weather Radars:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is <\/span><b>like a dish-antenna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that transmits radio waves and would detect rainfalls, snowstorm and other weather phenomena..<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wind Profilers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>special radar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that measures wind speed at different heights. It helps in better prediction. It is used by pilots as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Radiosondes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>small device attached to a balloon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is used to measure temperature, pressure, and humidity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Cloud-Simulation Chamber:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It will be set up in IITM where scientists would work on artificial clouds.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><b>Cloud-seeding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cloud seeding is a <\/span><b>kind of a weather modification technology to create artificial rainfall.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It works only when there are enough pre-existing clouds in the atmosphere.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pw.live\/batches\/upsc?utm_source=seo+upsc+batch&#038;utm_medium=seo+upsc&#038;utm_campaign=seo&#038;utm_id=upsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Enroll now for UPSC Online Course<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100.1%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th style=\"width: 100%; border-style: solid; border-color: #000000; background-color: rgba(184, 165, 217, 0.53); text-align: left; vertical-align: middle;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Maharashtra and Cloud-Seeding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Based on IMD forecast in April 2015, the Government of Maharashtra took a note of deficit rainfall forecast and planned cloud seeding experiment.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Control Lighting:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are also plans to control lightning.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India,<\/span><b> lightning strikes are the number one cause of nature-propelled deaths, above floods and landslides<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Due to this the scientists are hoping to tweak the electrical characteristics of the cloud so that there are fewer lightning strikes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Benefits:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This will <\/span><b>help in detecting accurate weather conditions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which will further help during eviction during disasters.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will also give a boost to solar and wind energy due to better detection thus improving daily lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Challenges and Ethical Concerns:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Weather is a natural phenomenon which cannot always be predicted 100 percent.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Long Term Impact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The mission aims for cloud-seeding which is weather modification or changing the characteristics of clouds.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This could have negative aspects as well. One place might have heavy rainfall and other places would have low rainfall.
