As the nation marks 50 years of this historic integration, it is important to understand the complex interplay of monarchy, politics, and geopolitics that led to Sikkim\u2019s accession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"vc_button\">Also Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/sikkim-statehood-day-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sikkim Statehood Day 2025<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Sikkim Before 1947: A Kingdom with Unique Geopolitical Significance<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Establishment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sikkim was established as a <\/span><b>kingdom in 1642<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when three <\/span><b>Tibetan lamas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crowned Phuntsog Namgyal as its<\/span><b> first Chogyal (king).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>British East India Company formalized a protectorate over Sikkim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A <\/span><b>formal protectorate was established over Sikki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m through the <\/span><b>Treaty of Tumlong in 1861, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning the British had control over it, but it was not officially under their rule, and the Chogyals could continue holding onto power.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Treaty of Titaliya (1817): It g<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ave the British authorities several <\/span><b>commercial and political advantages in Sikkim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Calcutta Convention of 1890:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It demarcated the<\/span><b> border between Sikkim and Tibet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and was signed by <\/span><b>Viceroy Lord Lansdowne <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Qing China\u2019s Imperial Associate Resident in Tibet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Lhasa Convention of 1904<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affirmed the Calcutta Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Although Sikkim was never directly ruled by the British,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it remained under their <\/span><b>influence as a buffer state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against <\/span><b>China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Nepal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Post-Independence: India\u2019s Ambiguous Relationship with Sikkim<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Unresolved Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sikkim\u2019s status remained <\/span><b>uncertain after 1947 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to its p<\/span><b>re-existing special relationship with the British.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diverse Opinions: Sardar Patel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and constitutional advisor <\/span><b>B.N. Rau initially proposed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Sikkim should sign the <\/span><b>Instrument of Accession<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><b>Nehru was cautious a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd preferred a <\/span><b>non-interventionist approach.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Standstill Agreement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>signed to maintain the status qu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o, with India managing Sikkim\u2019s defence, external affairs, and communication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ethnic diversity in Sikkim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It comprises <\/span><b>Bhutias, Lepchas, and Nepalis (the majority)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led to early demands for democracy and integration with India by political groups like the Sikkim State Congress (SSC), Praja Mandal, and Praja Sudharak Samaj.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1950 Indo-Sikkim Treaty: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Turning Point In 1950, the Indo-Sikkim Treaty formally made Sikkim an Indian protectorate.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>India assumed control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over Sikkim\u2019s <\/span><b>defence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>external affairs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>communication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while Sikkim retained<\/span><b> internal autonomy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian influence deepened, as <\/span><b>India gained exclusive rights to build infrastructu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">re and issued<\/span><b> Indian passports to Sikkimese citizens.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>How Sikkim joined India<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Change in political leadership on both sides:<\/b> <b>Death of Nehru in 1964 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and of his successor,<\/span><b> Lal Bahadur Shastri, in 196<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. For<\/span><b> new Indian PM Indira Gandhi,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> her position <\/span><b>weakened after the 1967 general election<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s that saw her return to power with a reduced majority in the Lok Sabha.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Chogyal\u2019s Ambitions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Then Chogyal Tashi Namgyal died in 1963, and Maharaj Kumar Thondup succeeded him, planning to leverage this period of change to seek an independent status for Sikkim.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strategic Pressure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This was also after the<\/span><b> India-China war of 1962, where India lost. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It made it all the <\/span><b>more important to contain skirmishe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s between <\/span><b>Indian and Chinese troops on the Sikkim border.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Growing anti-monarchy protests in 1973: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It led to the royal palace being <\/span><b>surrounded by thousands of demonstrators.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chogyal was forced to r<\/span><b>equest Indian military assistance to restore order.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tripartite agreement was signed between: T<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Chogyal, Government of India, and major Sikkimese political parties.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><b>agreement laid the groundwork for political reforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><b>elections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> curtailing the king\u2019s powers.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1974\u201375:<\/b> <b>Referendum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Abolition of Monarchy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Integration<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>In 1974: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elections were held, and <\/span><b>Kazi Dorji\u2019s Sikkim Congress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won a <\/span><b>clear<\/b> <b>majority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
