{"id":23333,"date":"2023-06-23T20:57:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-23T15:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/?p=23333"},"modified":"2023-06-26T05:47:57","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T00:17:57","slug":"a-doorway-to-an-entrepreneurial-university","status":"publish","type":"editorial-analysis","link":"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/editorial-analysis\/a-doorway-to-an-entrepreneurial-university","title":{"rendered":"A Doorway to an Entrepreneurial University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a definite need to create instruments and pathways that foster research and lead to a commercialisation of research output, so that the university system can capitalize the intellectual value of a new product or processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A New Phase- the Entrepreneurial University:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint enterprise of academia and industry, for creating innovations is now entering a new phase, which brings us to the entrepreneurial university.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is to <\/span><b>ensure a fine balance between education and enterprise, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where learners pay an optimal price of attaining knowledge, gaining employable skills, or pursuing serious research.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the Need?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lack of Creativity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the Indian context, universities don\u2019t promote creativity, innovation and inventiveness, while they do excel when it comes to academic rigor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Absence of Conducive Ambience:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In absence of conducive ambience to follow a dream of having a venture of their home, many bright students coming out of IITs and IIMs like institutions end up working for MNCs for plush paying jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Professor of Practice(PoP)- A Right Pointer Towards an Entrepreneurial University:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, the <\/span><b>University Grants Commission (UGC)\u2019s move <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clearly shows how universities are best positioned to foster innovation, simply because of the flow of new sets of bright minds every year, seeking to push the frontiers of knowledge further.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is PoP &#038; How is it different?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>PoP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is typically <\/span><b>an individual with significant experience in their industry, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appointed to a faculty position at a university to share his\/her practical knowledge and skills with students.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Unlike Traditional Academic Professors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PoPs are often <\/span><b>hired from outside academia, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and may<\/span><b> not be required to have a PhD or other advanced research degree.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bring Real-World Insights and Perspectives:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Based on their expertise and experience in a specific profession or industry, they are expected to bring real-world insights and perspectives to the classroom. PoPs can be found in fields that include business, engineering, law, journalism, and the arts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Objective:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To<\/span><b> enhance the quality of higher education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by bringing practitioners, policymakers, skilled professionals, etc. into the higher education system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Advantages:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will <\/span><b>help take real world practices and experiences <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into classrooms and also augment faculty resources in higher education institutions. In turn,<\/span><b> industry and society will benefit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from trained graduates who are equipped with the relevant skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will also help in<\/span><b> unemployment reduction.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Expectations:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day, PoPs will lead to a new generation of <\/span><b>\u2018entrepreneurs in residence\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showing the way for bright students to create the next Google on campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Roles They can Perform:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Mentor &#038; Ambassador:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They can serve as mentors for student projects &#038; can serve as ambassadors for their universities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Industrial Associated Courses Development:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Develop new courses that are more aligned to industry trends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Collaborator: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can collaborate with other faculty on research projects and point to ways of converting patents into commercial products (which they do regularly in the industry).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Internship &#038; Job Opportunities Provider:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Building relationships with industry partners and helping to connect students with internship and job opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Updated Practicers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can also participate in professional organizations and conferences to stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reshaper:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PoPs can reshape a university\u2019s commercial thinking and energize the actions that add vividity to a university\u2019s culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Steps Taken in this Direction:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The \u2018herSTART\u2019 initiative: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An initiative of the Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC) aimed at supporting women-led startups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The<\/b> <b>Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It emphasizes partnerships with industries and relevant skilling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Atal Innovation Centres:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The government of India launched the Atal Innovation Centres, which provide managed workspace for startups to operate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Incubation centers (ICs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ICs at educational institutions seek to nurture technology and knowledge-based ventures through their start-up phase by providing the necessary support to help entrepreneurs survive in the competitive market and reach a stage where they can scale-up their ventures further.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seeks to tap the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs from abroad, including those of Indian origin to augment the country\u2019s existing academic resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Various schemes implemented by the Ministry of Education for promotion of the research ecosystem of the country&#8217;s higher education institutes:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impacting Research Innovation and Technology Innovation with teaching and research are the three foundational pillars in universities in today&#8217;s post-knowledge societies.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these innovations, university-based start-ups would not only incubate ideas but also convert ideas into patents and transform patents into commercial products.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Statutory Backing: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need to come up with new required laws and regulations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Strict Implementation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Need to implement the laws in a strict manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Collaboration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Need to collaborate with other countries for achieving better
