Share:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There were seven Assembly constituencies and in these seven Assembly constituencies, the BJP polled 34% of the votes compared to its overall 42% vote share, though the Congress polled almost similar votes.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>This shows that voters seem to prefer male candidates to female candidates.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reason of Reluctance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This low vote outcome to some extent explains why political parties may be reluctant to give tickets to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/upsc-notes\/role-of-women-and-womens-organizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> candidates and why mandatory quota within the party may not be the way forward for increasing women\u2019s representation in politics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other Concerning Trends: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female candidates have a relatively low strike rate if they had to face male candidates of the other party, which proves the existence of a male-dominated vote bloc.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were <\/span><b>13 Assembly constituencies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the Congress fielded male candidates against the BJP\u2019s female candidates and at last BJP won 6 seats and Congress won 7.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the BJP fielded male candidates against the female candidates of the Congress in<\/span><b> 21 Assembly constituencies.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Of these, the male candidates of BJP won in 15 Assembly seats and the female candidates of the Congress won in only 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span class=\"vc_button\"><b>Also Read:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/female-labour-force-participation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female Labour Force Participation In India<\/span><\/a><\/span>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><b>No Contagion Effect<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Distributing more tickets to women in the first-past-the-post system may not necessarily lead to more representation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/current-affairs\/reservation-of-women-in-legislature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women in legislature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There is hope of a contagion effect, but this has not happened.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>In the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pwonlyias.com\/stage\/ncert-notes\/first-past-the-post-system-process-impact-on-representation-and-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>first-past-the-post system<\/b><\/a><b>, if one party provides a gender quota, it does not incentivise other parties to follow suit.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Example:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>Trinamool Congress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave tickets to 46 women candidates in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections of which 32 candidates won. But the total number of women MLAs did not increase in the Assembly.
