The concept of rights forms the <\/span><b>basis of modern legal and political systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it is integral to the promotion of justice and individual autonomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Understanding Rights:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A right is <\/span><b>a justified claim or entitlement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that individuals have as citizens and human beings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Needs vs. Wants: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are what we believe we should get from society.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not everything we want is a right \u2013 there&#8217;s a difference between what we really need and just things we want.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Universal Nature: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rights can be<\/span><b> categorized as universal,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they are important for all members of society.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They contribute to well-being by helping individuals develop skills and talents<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100.201%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><b>Point to Ponder:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the genesis of democratic polity, the masses as subjects had all responsibilities without authority and rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emergence of the concept of <\/span><b>\u2018Rights of individuals\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has, however, changed the relation between the <\/span><b>ruling class and style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By requiring the government to answer to the people, political rights and<\/span><b> civil freedoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> together lay the groundwork for a democratic system of government.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b> Socio-economic:<\/b>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><b>Basic Well-Being: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socio-economic rights recognize that for<\/span><b> political rights to be fully exercised, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and health must style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Immanuel Kan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t, a thinker from the past, talked about <\/span><b>two kinds of things:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with a price and those with dignity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Kant&#8217;s philosophy urges us to respect others not solely for their utility, but for their<\/span><b> shared
